oowee
During my FAC interview the FEO said he would approve the field behind my house for .22rf and to put it forward once the ticket came through with any other land for approval. Its basically a field of about 140m long rough pasture climbing about 2m at the top from the bottom, behind is a hill about 50 meters high not mine but I have permission from the farmer for shot to fall on it. I would like to build a 100m range and build a backstop suitable for .22rf. Does anyone have any experience of building one? A simple earth bank would work but i want to minimise land take as the farmer takes hay from the land and also puts cattle and sheep on it. Ideally something like a pellet trap as for air pellets but for bullets would be ideal, as i could take it up the field. It might be loud? Can you buy them in the uk? Any ideas welcome. Vince Green
A 5 gallon water drum filled with damp SHARP sand works best provided you can hit it reliably
Westley
I've seen people use tyres in piles I feel certain a suppository would be less painful though !
Harry136
For a .22 range you could just stack some railway sleepers about 6ft wide and 6 ft high. and maybe pile some sand against them.
Castle
Not necessarily specific for .22RF but as others have said you cannot beat sand for stopping rounds. 'Granular Impact' is the phenomena that stops a golf ball so quickly when it hits a bunker. It's the same thing with bullets - if they hit anything that is homogenous (sheet metal, wood etc) then all the energy is transferred to one place. When bullets hit something like sand the power is passed from grain to grain and quickly dispersed. Ceramic body armour plates work this way. There are also benefits of reducing ricochet and spall (splashes of lead) compared to a hard backstop. Sand might be overkill for .22RF - not sure - but it is the safest thing I can think of. You are lucky indeed! I would love to have a 100m range at the back of my house!
oowee
Thx for all the advice. I like the idea of sand.
