fse10
Well after asking if any one on PW had been out with crouch valley essex wildfowling today was the day. Got to their marsh at 5:40 mate was putting decoys out in the creek to await the tide when about a 100 widgeon came over the top of us had not even taken the guns out of the slip. Well as it got lighter we could see large packs of teal lifting from the main river & wizzing about what a sight. Just then four widgeon which came in fast & low came up in front of us did not even have time to raise the gun & they had gone. Sat there feeling like a tool for not seeing what should have been a couple of easy birds, i looked up & six teal had come in in front & started to clime gun up, bang bang well rodger me my first ever teal & a left & a right to boot two drakes down what pretty little birds. Over the next hour or so had a lot of birds come in only to drift over to our left & over another two guys who pulled off some lovely high shots & took at least nine birds. Over the next few hours i manged another teal this time a hen bird & hit another two that made it some 100yrds back out on to the flooded marsh wanted to send my mates dog out for them but he said they'ed be strong runners & did not think the dog would fined them , i felt a little bad about this but i spose if it's a pricked bird them not to much to be done about it. About half hour of the flight left & my mate had a cracking high fast hen widgeon which came down like a stone to his first shot. So think i had a cracking first time out on the crouch & will book with them again soon. ATB fse10. Edited November 8, 2015 by fse10
fenboy
Well done on your Teal , it was a strange decision from your friend not to send his dog , they would have been more likely to sit tight than run anywhere , everyone loses a bird occasionally but I do think every effort should be made to find them. anser2
Sounds as though you had a great flight FSE. One of the main reasons for having a gun dog is to retrieve runners. Dead birds you can often retrieve youreself , but runners on a flooded marsh are another matter. I would guess my lab retrieved at least 30 runners from water ( mainly fast flowing creeks ) last season and yes she lost one or two , but 90% were brought to hand.
