Chris Bb
think on this...........with the new generation of engines for these ships it is cheaper to send a washer from hong-kong to london than it is from lincoln to london............... Figures from Wikipedia: The "Emma Maersk" (400m, 109,000hp container ship) carries 11,000 (+) x 14 tonne containers at 30 mph on 14,000 litres/hour. That's 154,000 tonnes cargo. So, assume an HGV carries 40 tonnes, that's 3,850 lorries doing 30 miles on 14,000 litres. So, pro rata, that gives each lorry 3.6 litres to do 30 miles, or about 37 mpg. And the ship is driven by a total crew of 13, 24/7. Smaller ships, smaller efficiencies but cheap by any comparison. Apparently, the international shipping costs of any high street "white goods" imported from the far East is measured in pennies, such is the effect of scale.
