Whippet X Greyhounds are very nice dogs with speed to burn, as for whats a good X and whats not, well there isnt realy an answer to that mate, if you ask would so and so a cross be good for this job,that would be a lot easier to answer. The best advice I can offer is to say, look at what you want to do with your lurcher,eg Ferreting, lamping rabbits ,or pre ban, coursing hares,ect Then try to find someone who uses lurchers for the same sort of work as you are going to be doing,in your area,or on similar type of ground, if you can have a look at there dogs working,and if they do the job well, go for a dog of that kind of breeding. To be quiet honest most Lurchers what ever cross they are,given the right training and plenty of opportunity,will do most kinds of lurcher work ,it is only when you want to take lurcher work to its extreme ,and realy specialise do,s one particular cross become better than an other,also what kind of land you are running on,eg big fen land ,small fields . I'll Pm you a link to a site that will be of help to you , any other questions just ask,i'm not an expert by any means,but have grown up with whippets and lurchers,and have lived with them and worked them all my life,and have been fortunate to have walked out with quiet a few very good dog men,and seen many dogs of different types work. Posted April 23, 2007 Report Share Posted April 23, 2007 if you want a dog for explosive speed in close quarters, that will bush about abit, then a beddlington terrier x wippet (first cross) is the dog for you. If your looking for an allrounder that you can lamp with and course rabbits over larger spaces as well as ferrting, marking and nailing bolted bunnies then a wippet x grey X collie x grey would be spot on for longer coursing and more 'crunch'.............then the greyhound x bull cross ususally half cross or 5/8ths grey x 3/8ths bull will give a leggy, racey but powerfull lurcher. Posted April 25, 2007 Report Share Posted April 25, 2007 I am a big advocate of bull x cross and have 3 that we work......I still think that for close range work a smaller lurcher would suit you better....... bully has a good nose and will bush....but he takes a bit longer to reach full speed.....but on a straight flat course after 40 yeards he'll take some catching. beddy wippet is the one for you mate hard as nails and very very quick off the mark!!!! pre ban.........bull x's were used to course foxes and believe it or not Roe deer (very effectivley) to give you idea of how capable they are.......................not really a close range rabbit dog All lurchers a great though Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They are Beddlington-Whippet X Whippet LB LB, Would those come with a broken coat or a smooth coat? I get a picture of a small Smithfield type dog, is this correct?
