Danger-Mouse
they want around £4000 Ouch! Might be better putting him on your policy as a named driver. Just make sure your NCB is protected. I know it doesn`t help him get a NCB but it might be the cheapest option for now.

Cosd
Are you getting quotes with black boxes? I insured both my girls for about £1600 each fully comp. on renewal their insurance came down to £540 and that includes £50 breakdown cover. These quotes are based on Fiat 500's. E27N_JD
just done a quote with Privilege on a peugeot 107 1.0l and the price was £2100 that's crazy ! i was really shocked with the quote. my friend had a 1.9 alpha romeo giulietta cloverleaf 139bhp for his first car he bought it cash and had to sell it when he couldn't insure it. he now drives a jag that is 2 insurance groups higher ! norfolk dumpling
Try the market comparison sites ie Confused.com, Go compare etc but whatever your son does buy a standard car ie no mods at all no even suspension changes. Also look carefully at the insurers who offer 'black box' monitoring as rates can come down rapidly with good behaviour - my young nieces and nephew benefitted from this type of policy.
