Guest
Hello all. Just went to visit a new permission today, and to my surprise the land owner said I could shoot deer! My question is does anyone know if Devon and Cornwall require you to have DSC or similar before they grant deer?
foosa
DSc 1 is not a legal requirement anywhere to be granted deer on your ticket, if you have a suitable calibre rifle and land with deer present, maybe a written confirmation letter from the land owner I don't see how they can refuse really? Guest
This is true. But what I'm asking is does anyone know if they will actually do this or will they hit me with conditions?
Guest
So far Devon and Cornwall have been superb, quick service and gave me an open ticket straight away on my rimfire. So hope they wouldn't be difficult now. Edited February 5, 2016 by Guest
foosa
If they refused on grounds of needing a dsc1 I would be straight onto BASC with that one!
Guest
Yeah, it's the only way really. That said though, does anyone know if they place conditions on for deer? Edited February 5, 2016 by Guest

THESTALKER
They will prob ask if the ground is passed for the caliber of rifle and they may ask for a Mentor to guide you for a while..

That's D+C police Oh right, as in he needs a mentor? Or he has to do DSC? I've sent my FAC for variation nearly 3 weeks ago and haven't had a phone call or heard anything back at all. Wonder what's going on with if?
Guest
My FAC still hasn't come back in nearly a month, this is unusual for Devon and Cornwall. Hopefully they haven't hust dismissed it out of hand eh.
DaveT
D&C would only rid me of my mentoring condition once I'd done my dsc 1.

Guest
Was that DSC1 condition on the grounds of shooting safety? Also, they have no right to do they? Edited February 21, 2016 by Guest
plonker
First of all bigman, ask yourself a few questions. 1 can you identify the species of deer you are going to shoot? 2 can you identify the sex so as to know what is legal to shoot and what is not? 3 If you are going to eat the carcass do you know how to safely gralloch it. 4 Would you be able to check the health of the carcass before eating it or passing it on to friends to eat? If you know the answers crack on and good luck. If you don't know the answers then maybe a mentor/dsc1 is a good thing to help you learn. Dave Ps enjoy stalking

Dave Ps enjoy stalking well put Dave i was mentored when i first started stalking and although i had alot of shooting/hunting experience i certainly would not of been happy gralloching a deer without seeing it first a few times. Ruster
I am also in Devon and I got my mentor taken off a couple of weeks ago with out the need to do a dsc1, My licence says on it I can shoot any lawful game this would include deer, so check what your licence says if it has 'any lawful game' on it then you should be fine as long as they are in season
Guest
Got a mentoring condition in my FAC. I've booked myself onto a DSC1 course because to be honest I'm not 100% happy gralloching a deer. The Police also told me this is enough to remove my mentoring condition. Also it says I can shoot all lawful quarry with fox specifically mentioned. Sensible stuff, better than requiring people to own loads of different guns for different species. Guest
Further to my last post, filling out the paperwork to book DSC1. It asks for my membership details of the BDS. Am I now to believe that on top of £300 for a 3 day course, nearly £100 for the pre course study materials, I am now expected to cough up another £50 or so to join the deer society to qualify to do any of this?! It's taken a while to get this far, I'm starting to wonder if it's bloody worth it and how the hell has anyone ever gotten through all this red tape and expense. Dunkield
You will be taught theory only on the DSC1 you will not be taught how to gralloch (unless it has changed in recent years) IMO you would be better off finding an experienced, trustworthy local mentor to show you the ropes both stalking and dealing with the carcass until you are happy doing it yourself.
