dodeer
My trusty old 89 reg Fourtrak 2.8td which i have had for years has now started to not change into 2nd gear very well. Oil has been changed in gearbox last week. Worse when it is cold. Have to rev the engine and/or double de clutch to engage it. Has been stored for 8 months without any use. Any ideas? BSA Shaun
Does it improve when it is warm to the extent that its fine? Is it troublesome between 1st and 2nd or 2nd down from 3rd? Check the gearbox oil level for a start, sounds sync mesh to me tho at the mo
dirk
could be a clutch problem gearbox may be o.k.
farmer
Not sure if this is the same problem as I had on my Fourtrak when I had it. Theres a bolt comes loose at the back of the gearbox if you have a look on any Daihatsu forums on the net and just do a search for "2nd gear problem" you'll get sorted the job is quite easy to sort if you're mechanically minded just a case of splitting transfer box and gearbox

BSA Shaun
Buy a landrover ? Oh yes the ultimate mobile. Love mine to bits. Its leaks oil, but that's just to remind me its not empty! And has done some serious lunar milage!
pin
Its leaks oil, but that's just to remind me its not empty! I think that's a quality quote right there! To keep this on topic, there seems to be a fair bit on the net about "2nd" problems on those..
Pipmoff
Mine was a bit tight when cold to go into 2nd when I got it, had to double clutch etc, but I put 75/90 semi synthetic gear oil in the gearbox and transfer box and its sweet now. As for buying a landrover don't make me laugh he's already got the most reliable 4x4
decroyffe
As for buying a landrover don't make me laugh he's already got the most reliable 4x4 i agree, just getting rid of my landy for another fourtrak, twice the price and for what, never been pulled out in a fourtrak yet, there more reliable, comfortuble and practical. Landys are like babys, they need constant attention. you need a spanner in one hand and a manual in the other. you havn't got time for a paying job cos your always under the bloody thing, plus if you have a paying job you need another car to get you there by the way, my 90's on ebay if anyone wants a look, i would'nt buy it tho
dodeer
Many thanks for the replies. Will change the oil to see if that helps then if not then i'll try tightening the nut .
al4x
beware which nut you undo to check the oil. One side and I can't remember which holds the selector rod for 5th. Undo the bolt and the rod drops down inside the box.
