Owenwill
Our Fresian bull calves go for export now the ban has been lifted, still only get a pittance for them but anything's better than seeing them shot, which many were till recently, only the dead ones go to the kennels

kirky640
Was OK but didn't explain the true problems to the thicko's from the cities. Should have explained why the calfs are worth nothing. pis*ed me off a little i think the calf aspect of it ie getting shot would saden the hardest of us realy gripped my throat when the man just walked up to the calf and it was goodnight forever thats just not rite it cant be kirky
kirky640
yes we shoot it and feed it to dogs and people on the other side of the world are starving shows how ******* mad this world and country is it makes me mad when i get into it all gotta watch my blood pressure tho kirky
kirky640
If we wern't importing **** meat in healthy calfs wouldnt be going to the dogs. but because of the low prices of imported meat theres getting less and less money going to british farmers. pis*es me off that theyre showing the meat being wasted but not many people acctually realise the reasons behind it. tell me then why as i see it they gotta be worth somehting even if you put them in your own freezer for a yummy tea kirky waiting with open ears
Tam
Then we would need to import meat for the hounds B)
Owenwill
I didn't watch the program last night, taped it to watch later, but I assume it was Fresian bull calves that were being shot? The reason they are worth so little is that the fresians are bred purely for producing milk so when a bull calf pops out its bad news for us, sad to say but it's just not worth our while to rear them for beef as the beef dealers in the markets just don't want them, however as said in my previous post now the export ban has been lifted we get an average of £50 per 2week old calf, they usually go to spain/portugal for veal,( in very good conditions I might add ) we just take them to the haulage depot about 15 miles away, as for saying foreign imports are ruining it for us I would have to disagree, we rear about 60 beef calves from birth, usuall Belgian Blues ( from artificial insemination ) or from our own Hereford bull, at about a year and half old these are fetching between £5-800 at market if finished well. Like I say,not seen prog yet but look forward to watching it later
al4x
The programme was a bit out of date in my eyes. It was shot arround 2005 when we still had a ban on exports. What killed the trade was the banning of producing veal in the UK and then the banning of exporting calves. Much of the trade has picked up so it really doesn't happen much these days. However it was powerfull in that it left people to make their own ming up and just tried to present a how it is picture rather than preach anything which in my eyes made it more powerful. The lessons are buy everything you can from smaller shops as only people power boycotting supermarkets will make any difference. I do believe though that we are beginning to turn the corner the consumer is becoming far more educated about meat and what to look out for when buying it. I just wish they didn't all just believe because it says its organic it must be better.
Teal
The reason male calves used to get whacked is you had to get them ear tags and registered- this costs more than the profit you would make on it for meat. As said- now the export ban has been lifted, it's just about worth rearing the little blighters.
kirky640
The reason male calves used to get whacked is you had to get them ear tags and registered- this costs more than the profit you would make on it for meat. . the above is total tosh the reason is because holstein calves ie dairy calves male ones dont have any shape to them and dont fill out well, they dont fatten well kirky
Teal
... hence it doesn't cover the cost of the ear tags and registration. It's around £7 I believe.
