bluesj
I went out this morning to test some cartridges, it was quick only fired 2 for testing. Loads of crows about I tried eley pigeon select 30g 6s fiber wad and gamebore velocity 28g 71/2s fiber wad at 25 yards through my sxs with very little choke in the right hand barrel. I know there has been a thread or two about the eleys and a few people me included say you need tight chokes to get the best from them, any way what i found was a count of 131 hits in side a 30" circle witch equates to 50% of the 262 pellets but the pattern was a bit like a dough nut with a hole in the middle big only 35 pellets hit inside a 12" circle and only 4 inside 6" the gamebore had a count of 248 in the 30" equating to 83% of the 298 pellets with 64 in side 12" and 18 inside 6" with an even spread. sitsinhedges
The 28g 7.5 would have had around 400 pellets to begin with.

And that is why everyone should pattern their gun with any new cartridge and open one up to check components.. Realistically you are shooting 30g 5 1/2 and 28g 6 1/2 as both manufacturers have used non standard sized pellets to increase hitting power, but that gamebore load is a lovely inexpensive load for pigeon if both before and after counts are accurate. I use the gamebore for pigeons but wanted something with a little hitting power for the crows so got the eleys as that was what was about here, they are ok in my o&u and in my semi auto as i just fit tighter chokes but i can do that with my sxs. think i'll get some clear pigeon next time if none of the rfds around here can supply them it'll have to be just cartridges
dipper
Not much point patterning a gun at 25 yards unless that's as far as you shoot . IE skeet . Best do it at 40 yards use a piece of wood with a nail and a pencil fixed on 15 inches apart to get your 30 inch circle . Dipper.

That was the plan but some crows put an end to that
