Stonepark
Take stock off and check for crud from the inside as well as outside.
Blackpowder
How old is the gun? On a new or re-jointed gun the lever will not necessarily return to the centre position. Blackpowder

HunterFarmer
What gun is it? Its a french 75 side by side I used a good drop of normal lubricating oil and it seems to be working fairly well now!
Graham M
Funny how shotguns seems to work better when you clean them Seriously though if the gun is starting to become sticky it's time it had a good service. Strip the action down and take out the top lever and the bolt (the sliding bit that the lump locks on to). If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself take it to a gunsmith (not a dealer) and get it done for you. If you simply fill it with oil it will seep back into the stock and rot it.
