Wookie
Vista takes a _lot_ of resources. Yes, a new graphics card _might_ help, but the drivers for a lot of things are known to be a bit... Flaky. Yes, we'll say that and move on. My advice? Put XP media on and wait until Vista SP1 comes out.
Guest rabo
My advice? Put XP media on and wait until Vista SP1 comes out. that's what i would do least it would get you running smoother, nothin as bad bloody freezing or crashing.

I swapped to mac 2 years back and have never regretted it (except running COD2+)

But its next to useless even taking 3 chest shots at under 15yds CoD2 looks brill (only played the demo) but lots more british on german action and in the desert of all places! Dunkield
I am running Vista Platinium on my PC now for three months now with no problems. We are on the early adopter program from MS so we had beta releases yonks ago and finally ran it up on few capable PC's months ago - it works just fine. I have it on a brand new notebook at home that was 'designed' to run it (marketing speak I know) and runs like a dream. You won't get Aero desktop to run unless you have a capable graphics card and plenty of RAM. But in all fairness it runs a performance test on install to determine what features will be available to you when installed - so in a way, protecting you from yourself  If you don't like it, stick to XP, but it is here to stay, MS are pushing really hard for the major player to ship it on ALL their PC'/Notebooks - in fact they had a minor falling out with one of them over this just recently
Wookie
That was Dell wasn't it? From their point of view, it's what customers were asking for, so they were really obliged to do that. Vista has some really good features, but it is just not enough to tempt me to it right now. XP _works_ for me on my system and that's all that I want in an operating system that I have to use. JohnGalway
I now have two hard drives to do a ballistic destructive test on  Please photograph and post the results Or better video them If only I had had my shotgun and .223 when I had those Gateway computers... rabbithunter
I can but try a new graphic card and i,ll put in some more memory and see how it goes ! If not back to xp .
OldBill
Had the same issues with a 6 week old computer. More memory did not sort it, reverting back the XP Media did. Most features of Vista can be added to XP with add on packs anyway. On the plus side I've got COD2 on my phone

Pushkin
RH, I'm no expert but my understanding is that static can fry some of the smaller ciruitry - and that is the reason they recommend grounding the base unit either through a wrist srap you wear when working on your puter or by leaving the plug in the wall socket but not switched on - earth is still provided apparently. I'm sure others with more knowledge can keep you right on this subject though. pushkin B)
pin
Static sensitive components, and there are a load of them in a PC (memory, various motherboard components etc) can be either fatally damaged or "wounded" by static electricity. Imagine the many millions of tiny wires inside a memory chip, the "tracks" on the circuit board. Thousands and thousands of them. An electrostatic discharge, zap!, can either completely break these tracks or, as it more common partially break the track. IBM did some research into this some years back, when people had no idea this could happen. They commissioned some incredibly expensive (then) electron microscopy - thinly slicing the chips and taking photos at thousands and thousands of times magnification. What they saw astounded them, the tracks, as small as they are, looked like they had been hit by lightning. Some were completely broken, others were partially broken. This lead on to the possibility of premature failure of these components due to the damage caused. Any technician who knows what he's doing will always take ESD precautions, wearing a proper earthed strap as well as working on an earthed mat (and loads of other things). Most people know someone who has built hundreds of machines and "never bothers, never seen any die yet". Well, they do, just a year or two down the line they die, all due to not taking the precautions

dazzyboi
Iv been running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition no problems, got it when it was first released, only thing iv had a problem with is graphics cards drivers (Which are now resolved) and an application which i used previously doesnt run on vista. Apart from that, fast, snappy, responsive. I find 1gb ram a minimum in vista, but for a no hassle time go with 2gb
