oowee
Staying up near Craster for a week and very nice it is too. Can't help but admire the fat pigeons that are about on the Barley up here. Hoping the shooting is good for you guys it looks like it should be! I hope there are some back in Somerset when I get home on Sunday. saddler
Aye - not a bad spot if the sun is out - kippertown. Nip along the road to Alnwick. Look for the old Victorian train station after you enter from the south (heading for the centre, pass the hospital on your right & its on the left, opposite the lion monument).it's now a very big & comfy bookshop. "Barter Books" - they do have a small section on country sports, a good section on dogs & quite a few rare expensive one-offs. Cheap filter coffee, home-made biccies, a small cafe, log fire in the original waiting room, etc. Alnwick is very nice just to wander around, a couple of small museums too. Worked at the Bailifgate one for a while, free entry (or used to be) & the Northumberland Fusiliers museum where I also worked was in Alnwick Castle - it was also free entry (if they ask say you are going to the Fusiliers museum). Take a hefty pick-axe handle though! The grass strip leading up to the museum is the place where the flying scene was filmed for the first Harry Potter movie. You'll need to batter your way through the little ****s in purple capes & John Lennon specs, to get to the entrance. A swift blow behind the lug normally gives them the sensation of finally becoming airborne, if only for a couple of seconds. Wooller is a good stop off for a day trip too Nice town centre, a visitor centre & a few stone age areas or interest in the vicinity. Newly opened gunshop up the 697 in Milfield Further up you can nip to Branxton Hill - aka Flodden Field. A circular trip back to the A1 again could be done through Ford/Etal - small steam trains runs there in the summer. Don't forget to check the tide table if you want to take in Lindisfarne Loved my time in the Belford area. Never a dull minute!!
keg
It's all gorgeous up there. The walk from Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle is great. Lindisfarne, the Farne islands, Fish and Chips in Seahouses....
McSpredder
Geriatrics PW members might remember that, back in the 1960s, Sir John Craster of Craster Tower was a fairly regular contributor to Shooting Times. I think the same family still own the place.
oowee
Thx for the tips guys. Tried Lindisfarne but was stopped in 20mins by the burrs. Some sort of invasive spiky stuff in the grass from Newzealand ( Houseplant where are you when we need you lol) covered the dog and stopped it walking. Next 30 mins was spent trying to get it out of his fur. Walked into Alnwick from one of the local villages only to find I had left car keys in boot of car . Went to observatory in Kielder till 0100 in morning. What a night fantastic. Home tomorrow.
