I woke up yesterday to find 3 squirrels on the feeders at the bottom of the garden, I've been shooting these ******* now for about a year & the tally is up to 74  I'm seeing an increased population of the local songbirds in the area so hopefully I'm doing a good job

So I gets the rifle & pop all 3 in the space of a few minutes at a range of 30 meters all cleanly headshot & caught on the video camera  So when Pins got a few minutes he can hopefully get some footage on the videos section for ya

The crow was shot last night at the same place

What amazes me is the ability for them to keep on coming there's a small wood close by & this is where they live. There's me thinking I'm making some progress on the squirrel numbers round here & ****** me if there's not another 3 squiffers on me nuts again this morning :good: This time I only got the 1 the other 2 made a clean get away  But they'll be back

No wonder the native red squirrel doesn't stand a chance against these outsiders :D

Hi S.S

Well done keeping on top of the old tree rats, nothing worse than uninvited attention on your nuts :good:

We used to have too many squirrels in our woods, once we started using fenn mk4's set in tunnels we soon made serious inroads into them. Traps work 24 , 7 for you. i dont know if this is an option for you but it really works.

Wouldn't really work out in the back garden, but I could deploy some round my syndicate shoot how do you go about it, is it a case of making up a wooden tunnel & setting the mk4 inside? do you bait them? how small do you make the entrance? I don't want to go catching me a load of phezzies. (Pin no sarky comments)

Have you got any photos of your traps?

Cheers SS

Nice shooting, but that Crow is a ROOK

Kip you are quite right well spotted

Any big black bird in my mind is a crow, I will try harder in future

Hi S.S.

Yes the traps are placed in tunnels that are just big enough to allow the trap to open and function without hindrance any bigger and the rats / squirrels could possibly get past the trigger plate on the trap without springing it. we make our tunnels 3 feet long with a restriction at either end to stop non target species entering the tunnel. Regarding baiting the traps, personally if there are alot of squirrels or rats about i will use barley sprinkled underneath the trap as a bait.

However squirrels and rats natural curiosity will get them into the tunnel. traps need to be set on the lightest setting you are brave enough to set also recessed into the ground so the trap is flush with the ground and not sitting on top of the ground. Nerves of steel are required for hair trigger settings as even with the safety on if the trap springs in your hands i assure you a botty twitch will occur ha ha!!. I will post some pics of our tunnels and traps as soon as time allows, as we all know a picture speaks a thousand words.

hope this helps.
