naddan28
Fortunately I have 2 friends who are also on sandwich courses and have informed that this morning they received an email for all those who had successfully obtained placements. I was not on this mail out, even though I have a placement and had informed you of this via email some months ago. I assume this was a simple admin error? Could you please add me to the mailing list and send me the email, received by everyone else? Just as a refresher, I am working for BAE Systems, as a Project Accountant on the Harrier Jumpjet in Farnborough, Hampshire. Basically, I should have recieved an email about a meeting for placement students regarding final documents etc. Luckly my mate and girlfriend got the mail and told me so I sent him the above email. His response said I should "watch the tone" of my emails, in a company with a "strong coporate culture." Also, the fact he hadn't put me on the mailing list was due to me not completing a form, although the two mates of mine hadn't!? Afterall, how does he expect to know my bloody work email and phone number a month before I start!?! I think he is just being a tool and like most uni staff don't being questioned/prooved wrong!?? Thought I would get a second opnion on the email before I said anything. Dan

Lurch
Email doesn't sound too strong. Chummy sounds like an officious **** that doesn't like an uppity student calling him out.

pin
My approach would be :- Why get lippy? You got the information and you are upset you didn't. Why not ask why you didn't rather than making assumptions about someone else's job? There is a tone to your email, assuming it is copied here verbatim? My general approach to these kind of things is to keep it civil and don't antagonise anyone. That is, until you find out who screwed up and then let them have both barrels

Cranfield
I agree with pin. You should have found out why you did not get a copy, before complaining about it. You were then informed the reason was, you had failed to complete a form. How do you know your friends got the email and hadn't completed a form, perhaps they just said that to wind you up. ? Your "refresher", was also a bit of unnecessary sarcasm. When climbing a ladder, its best not to upset those on the rungs above you.

My general approach to these kind of things is to keep it civil and don't antagonise anyone. That is, until you find out who screwed up and then let them have both barrels I must do on average at least 50 letters a day. I am a bona fide expert in the "****ty" and the "licky" letter. The golden rule is never fall out with someone unless it is absolutely necessary, because: 1. you may need something from them one day 2. if you make it personal they will make time in their day to get you back and **** you over The words "fortunately", "informed", "I assume" and the multiple "?" (in that context) are arsey. Using the "I assume this was a simple admin error?" is a big no no. If you unpack this, you are saying that "I do not think this was a simple admin error" because: 1. if it were a simple admin error and you truly believed it to be so, you would have said nothing 2. the question mark invites a response - again, if you believed it to be so, then you have already answered your own question and do not need to add the question mark Try writing more stuff with charm and a little humour - it wins people over and costs nothing. kip270
Thank **** someone else knows what they are talking about You need to be a bit more diplomatic with your emails, as they say "**** runs downhill" so if you are trying to climb the ladder get an LARGE umbrella Edited May 25, 2007 by Axe

naddan28
Sorry guys, for the lack of a reponse. I concide the "fortunate" bit was not the best opening but as for a "simple admin error?", I just meant it as as was there a simple error, as the uni is notourious for forgettting people/accidently changing their status and the last thing I wanted was to move away get a job, then be told by the uni i should have been at uni not on placement. I just got really annoyed thats all because I know for a fact the others haven't filled their forms, as my girlfriend only was given it yesterday lunchtime. It just seemed, like most accademic staff, he got caught out but wasn't big enough to admit a mistake on his part and instead decided to have a pop at my email. Also, as I said, in order to complete "the form" I need to know my work telephone number and email. I am NOT phoning my future boss before I start and asking "where is my desk alongside an email and telephone number!" as I know this would be the worst of first impressions to make! Thankyou everybody for your opinions and next time I will bare all of what you said in mind and also not rush the email on the way out of the door to work! Thanks, Dan
