Scope failure 200 mile from home. ARRRGGGGHHHH!

Purchased a second hand scope recently for the 243 as wanted to replace my leupold ballistic milldot as find the reticle too hindering. Anyroads i recieved the scope, all appeared well and as described, nice clean glass and which retails at the 1k mark. Took a trip with one of me mates down to Minsterley range in Shrewsbury. Put the rifle frontend on a sandbag and i was looking down the bore, me mate asked me what i was doing? i replied i am bore sighting so can get on target with least rounds fired, dialed in trying too look technical as i had read up on bore sighting. Fires 3 rounds, not even on the the 24x36 inch plate, Arrrghh! so much for the me bore sighting, eventually got on target at an inch high at a hundred and well within a 1 inch group which i was extremely happy with as i have never had it group so well. Interestingly i usually use Hornady 100g interlock and got good groups with these after trying several other rounds, whilst i was at the range i picked up a box of Geco 105 grain tl and these grouped superbly better than the hornady and i am still trying to find a localish stockist as the rifle really likes them. Everywhere i have tried to get them has been out of stock.

So the following week, early start at 4am, drives the 200 mile trip to Scotland usual ground In to before for guided trip, savage weather driving up the m6 past shap, saw several unfortunate collisions as the snow driving up was that bad for 40 miles was down to 20 mph. The forecast had not given this and on looking at reports caught lots of others out. The weather put me back and even though i have made the trip before and had allowed for good time, i arrived 40 minutes late to a constant flurry of snow, scenery absolutely stunning. Out straight away on foot and the guide said may be a little more difficult with snow underfoot without a breath of wind as sound carries and we would have to be super stealthy. fifty minutes into the stalk with non yet seen though a couple of hinds heard i turned to notice the the objective lens of the scope extremely misted, a quick wipe to reveal the inner of the lens looking like milk and had obviously failed in the wet and cold conditions, absolutely gutted. the estate rifle was in use on another part of the estate by another person so was really up the creek., withe the visibility down to virtually nothing we obviously could not continue so it was decided that we came off the estate and off to anther piece of ground and went back to the guides house and picked up another rifle. but it really eat into a good few hours which were lost from the whole day i had booked. The guide is an agent for ziess and remarked that any scope can fail, it was dissapointing Ifind out this far from home, he, ho!

when i got back home after the 400 mile round trip emailed the seller and provided pics which you can see below and requested full refund which seller was happy to do and he was sending back to the manufacturer for repair/exchange as under warranty. Back up in the new year, going to buy a new ziess conquest dl and hopefully be sorted. will be getting out with the the rimmy now!

Fair play to the seller. Unfortunate but hopefully it's all sorted. Was it a new scope?

HI Owee

no it was a second hand scope in apparent very good condition which had been purchased new by the chap i got it from. The scope new is a £1000 and i paid approx half that so was not a cheap buy for anyone. As said, got full refund from seller and he can get it sorted with the manufacturer.

Fair play to the seller.

I also had a bit of an issue with a second hand scope recently which worried me but fair play the seller was top notch :)

Hi Loyd

yes, i recall your post, wasn't it concerns re marks on the objective lens ? glad you got a good outcome from the seller. The gentleman who sold me mine was very understanding re my concerns and once i had provided pictures he provided me with a full refund. I took pics at every stage of the packing and sent back special delivery, this helps cover most bases and helps should any disputes arise between parties.
