Cranfield
I need a new home telephone system. In the past I have always bought BT Synergy, three handsets Models, usually the Model 1500. However, I am replacing them every 18 months-2 years. Usually because the keys start sticking very badly, or the handset doesn't like being away from the base for longer than 10 minutes and other various irritating reasons. Do all digital phone behave like this and self destruct so quickly ? Before I buy another lot, does anyone have a system, or make/model number, they can recommend for durability and reliability ? SecretFollower
I've had a BT Synergy 3505 for about 2 1/2 years now and had no problems with it or the answer machine. It's only a single handset tho. Not sure if they do multiple handsets in this model.

I wonder how long my cheapo Binatone lasts Have a look at the Panasonic Dect Phones, I have had one for abiut 4 years and it is still perfect. I have also one Siemens hand set added to the system and that works well as well. Jerry
Mungler
I looked into this and asked around. The consensus was that whatever I bought wouldn't last as long as I wanted it to and it would become obsolete almost immediately. I bought a Siemens set out of currys and they were cheap as chips - my expectation was to use them for a year and then put them in the bin. Nearly 3 years later they still work well. How the heck can a 'phone become "obsolete"? It rings, you pick it up and you talk. How involved is that? Or are these things the latest fashion "must have" now? It's bad enough with mobile phones, but landlines Am I getting old?
dunganick
had our philips about 3 years now, odd handest gone down hte pan (we have 5 phones) but other than that been pretty good. TBH buy cheap and replace every 18months. I see alot of BT phones coming back, so pretty much go for any other range and you will be doing better. Mungler
Snakey, have you not been watching the new BT ads? Skype and VOIP is the way of the future. And yes, mark my words we will all be putting our current phones in the bin within the next 5 years. Out of interest, what's the longest anyone on here has had and kept their regular mobile phone? The maximum can't be much more than 3 years I would think.

My old man has had his 6210 forever it seems, gone through one battery, and just got another battery instead of phone.
Cranfield
The main problem seems to be finding a system that is a basic telephone with answering machine. Most want you to be GAP ready (I hate that shop) and appreciate all the flashing lights and other features you don't want (but will be paying for). I will purchase a system well under £100 and be ready to throw it away as soon as it acts up, Panasonic do have some good options.

And yes, mark my words we will all be putting our current phones in the bin within the next 5 years.. I will put my hand on my heart and say I have no idea what either is I have heard of skype on an adver on sky but to be honest as soon as the adverts come on telly I pick up the shooting times and read that until the programme comes back on! We had the sort of phone Snakey probably has in house (the one with dial on the front) for years and years, it only got binned when we whoever we called said 'press 1 for...' Did you know that you can buy those again now for that "retro" look? Cost about £100 though saw them in a shop and couldn't believe my eyes. As for answering machines doesn't anyone use the free BT one? Out of interest, what's the longest anyone on here has had and kept their regular mobile phone? The maximum can't be much more than 3 years I would think. I keep mine until the battery dies then get another. I am on pay as you go and £10 lasts for months. I try to do all my phoning from work, saves on bills That and when I get home the last thing I want to be doing is talking on the blooming phone all night! I would rather relax. bbjunkie
Skype is not the only VOIP provider, there are others, some of which are much cheaper. An analogy here would be that Skype VOIP is like the BT of internet providers. Anyone who thinks VOIP thinks Skype where a lot of people think BT are the only (DSL) broadband provider. I guess it's a lot to do with advertising. A lot of people also don't realise that Skype is P2P so in actual fact when your Skype software is running your broadband connection is forwarding data from other calls not only your own. - Careful if you are on a metered broadband package! Sorry to hijack - back to the main point.. I have a pair of BT's Quartet 3500 phones and they dont give me any bother, however they are rarely used as they are on a second line.
