ratus
Hi, Just thought i'd see Peoples thoughts on when i should reduce my Labradors feed down too twice a day? he's just short of 8 months, and i feed him morning, dinner & Tea time. Hes on skinners Game & country Crunch, i 3rd the required ammount for his weight (27kg), he is fed just after training / walk sessions. I'm sure he'll be happy to stick wi' 3 times a day. Cheers Ratus
tuck1
I personally would do no more than twice, my dog gets fed at night but young dogs can benifit from 2 feeds. There's no particular hard and fast though, only you can be the judge!
Cranfield
At six months I moved my dog to two meals a day. She gets half her daily allowance in the morning (by 8am) and the balance in the evening (5-6pm). Nothing at all in between, apart from a marrow bone section, once a week. Cheers Ratus Give it at least half an hour after, you don't want the dog to develop bloat. I'm on the same as Cranfield, from 6 months onwards we gave her half in the morning, half in the evening. biff
My dogs food bowls always full, as we have two working dogs and both are not too fussy or greedy when it comes to food, we always have it that way and they just feed whenever they feel like it. Is this wrong?
Cranfield
My dogs food bowls always full, as we have two working dogs and both are not too fussy or greedy when it comes to food, we always have it that way and they just feed whenever they feel like it. Is this wrong? I would say, "yes", but thats just my opinion. I have always been led to believe that dogs need routine in their lives and feeding times is probably one of the most important routines. There is also the matter of how much food they are eating and how hygienic it is, to have it laying around all the time. However, if you have always done this and never had any problems, perhaps it works for your dogs.
biff
I see what you mean. But I only feed them a complete feed, no fresh meat/dog meat so food stood standing in a bowl (indoors) shouldnt be a problem.
henry d
I have always been led to believe that dogs need routine in their lives and feeding times is probably one of the most important routines. and I`ll add that I only feed once and in the evening as both work and that way they are less likely to get as twisted gut. Rarely they will get small amounts at brekky(warm porridge) if I`m off `fowling or at the pigeons in wild/cold weather.
new to the flock
I have always been led to believe that dogs need routine in their lives and feeding times is probably one of the most important routines. and I`ll add that I only feed once and in the evening as both work and that way they are less likely to get as twisted gut. Rarely they will get small amounts at brekky(warm porridge) if I`m off `fowling or at the pigeons in wild/cold weather. Just read some interesting research on torsion...(twisted gut/ bloat).......it seems that the amount fed before or after being worked has far less to do with it then once thought. However it does appear to be a hereditary factor that dictates how suseptable a dog is to the problem. I will see if I can find the article. On working days I feed a light breakfast around 1/2 cup and normal evening ration. On non hunting days I only feed an evening ration. Puppies start out 3x a day then down to 2x's around 8 months, and then down to 1x after they are 1 1/2yrs. NTTF
