Old Boggy
I have now successfuly (well almost) managed to attach a photo to a previous post with the help of Dangermouse`s step by step guide using imgBB. My previous attempts using photobucket, even before they started charging, failed miserably, so I am now able in the future to bore the PW massive to tears with lots of useless and uninteresting bits and pieces complete with photos to match. I have therefore discarded my Box Brownie camera on account of it not having one of those USB thingies and now use my phone which is appropriately idiot proof and suits me to a tee. Today`s attachment is of the proof marks of my old Woodward and my query is whether the proof marks indicate when it was sleeved. There is a lozenge stamped just below the `Sleeved` stamp on the barrels sides as opposed to the later practice of being stamped on the flats with the letters `BW`, which I am told is Benjamin Wild of Birmingham. My research with Wild`s so far has drawn a blank so I`m not sure whether they still exist, although there appears to be a website. I am compiling a bit of a dossier on the history and provenance of the old gun and this currently is a missing piece of information. So is there anyone out there more conversant with proof marks than me, who can possibly shed some light on this for me. I get totally confused when trying to compare proof marks against a chart giving dates etc as they all look so similar. It was presumably originally proofed for black powder although there do not appear to be many stamped marks on the flats. I therefore thank anyone in advance of any information that they can come up with. Many thanks, OB

wymberley
Too small a photo for me. It might help if you take another one capturing the whole of the flats and when uploading choose one of the larger picture sizes as opposed to the thumb-nail one. Oh dear back to the drawing board, and there`s me thinking that I`d cracked this photo attachment malarky. However, it shows fully when viewing on my PC and ipad. Are you viewing on your phone ? McSpredder
Do the proof marks include crossed swords with letters? If so, this website may help you find the date. http://www.hallowellco.com/proof_date_codes.htm The photo below showing crossed swords with letter LB is from a gun of mine that was re-barrelled (not sleeved) in 1960. JohnfromUK
Tip - rubbing a little chalk in the proof marks can make them much easier to photograph.
