i am close to buying a cz452 american with standard barrel in .17hmr. i want to shoot paper out to about 100 yards and also shoot rabbit, squirrel, and crows etc.. i am figuring on installing a 3X9X40 scope on it. what do you think? do you think it is a mistake not getting the heavy barrel and beefing up on the scope?

Heavy barrel wont make any differance - but i would get a better scope - at least up tp 16 mag , ideal scope would be an MTC Viper 6-24x56mm, A .17HMr will shoot long range (200yrd bunnies are well within reach) and a 3-9x40mm just aint gonna do it for you.

I'd say 200yrd bunnies were pushing it a bit rather than "well within reach". If you are up to it, it can deal with things way past the capability of a 9x scope.

There has been a lot of research done on barrel length and the reason many people are opting for the shorter is it's not making that much difference. 20" to 16" looses you like 100fps, but amazingly people seem to have found although the shorter barrel means a slightly slower round, it is more consistent.

I think the figures I have seen sad 100fps variation over 20 shots with 20" barrel and <50fps variation, same 20 shots same ammo with 16"

The "varmint" barrel is thicker and is meant to be able to vary less with repeated quick shooting (will take more to overheat) but in practice I think its an aesthetic / weight and feel thing. I prefer the look of the varmint and I like the extra weight.

200 hundred yard bunnie's no problem with the above scope on a still day

If it was me I would go for a heavy barrel and a more powerful scope...and an Anschutz! But apart from the scope everything else is simply personal preference to be honest mate.

why Anschutz? if CZ's are so **** why do so many people on here have them?

you need more practise with that hmr then Pin :lol::good:

myself & Magman were shooting 150yrd bunnies with a .22rf on saturday morning

and i'm a lot more confident with my HMR than the .22, its all about steady, safe shots - i have shot bunnies at 250 yrds from a bipod on a nice sunny calm day.

I wasn't trying to be funny Oly but I would be interested to know the differences

Fair enough...it's totally personal preference though...for me it's quality and accuracy, and I feel that the extra money for an Anschutz is worth it...but many on here (who I also respect can have their own opinons) prefer CZ.

Trying to keep my head down on this one...again!:good::good:

I'm happy you are confident in your skills to take those shots on, not that I don't believe you but I'd love to see it done!

More than happy to keep it around the 150 mark until I learn more about it and get confident I know how it behaves in the wind etc.

I don't doubt it, at one time I probably was good enough but I need more practice. My best (same rangefinder, I had one of those off Paul!) 167yds.

Didn't for one second intend to suggest he can't do it, I am sure he can! Just would like to see it, purely to see how its done.

so you're up to 167 yard shots and you've had it about a fortnight won't be long before you're really stretching it

I've made 250 yard shots on still days and the key is knowing what range you are shooting at and having a decent set up as the gun has no difficulty killing at that range.

Have you looked at the 453? I am in same position as you and cant make up my mind if extra cost is worth it?

Any comments appreciated.

I did, for what its worth, it has an adjustable set trigger on there as the only difference.

From what I understand the set trigger has a lighter pull which you can configure, activate by pushing the trigger forward before firing. Otherwise it functions as normal.
