digger
I hope no one on here has suffered any damage due to the rain / monsoon ? Amazed at the stupidity of the guy who thought despite the warnings clambering into a man hole would be a good idea.
Cranfield
From the BBC news website, "Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said the man slipped and got his foot caught in a metal grate. Rescuers, including police divers, spent several hours battling to free the man, thought to be his 20s, but were unable to save him. " It sounds almost impossible that they couldn't free his foot from a metal drain, in "several hours". OK, we don't know the whole story, but that is unbelievable. lurcherboy
Surely the Police divers could have masked him up LB
deadeye ive
It was one of them triangular load bearing manhole covers that are normally in the road centre .Apparantly he was trying to unblock it and lost his footing and somehow got wedged in with the water level raising up to his neck line .Only guessing but if chest was restricted by lack of space and pressure of the water trying to escape down the gaps then he'd probably suffocated . monkeyjaimz
I work right next to the Humber and spent most of yesterday until about 8.45pm pumping surface water away to prevent damage to buildings and drainage systems where I work. Sorry to hear about that poor guy who drowned
SNAKEBITE
The bloke died from hyperthermia not drowning. They had eventually freed his foot but the cold got him first. He was a bit daft doing it but his intentions were honourable, he was helping an O.A.P. from getting flooded out, the drain cover was a temporary one that the council fitted after the proper one had been removed/damaged in floods last week. digger
I am amazed at the crass stupidity of some people shown on the national news tonight, wading down veritable torrents chest high just to wave at the camera. Then we had the usual shell suited chavs spending their benefit on white lightning and ten cheap fags rather than insurance. Any loss of life is tragic unless caused by the darwin theory. What happens is the water is flowing down/along the sewer and causes a vortex(look up venturi - sp?) and he is as good as lost unless you can stop the flow
