Westley
Dunno, BUT, I bet they were NOT all moaning about the guy with the semi-auto ! The trap looks like the old Eley plus trap. We inherited one when we took over the running of a local clay ground. The trapper stood behind the line, cocking and firing the trap by use of the long lever. The cocking rod then ran underground to the trap. The 'Trapper' sitting in the trap house, had very little time to plonk a clay on the trap arm and get his hand clear before the trap was fired again. An absolute 'Health and Safety' nightmare. We did not keep it for long before putting in a Farey auto trap. Feltwad
The trap to me looks very much like a Blair Gowie I shot many thousands of clays from this type of trap in the late 50,s and the 1960,s they were first used in the 1930,s Feltwad

VicW
The origins of 'Down the Line' are from the days of live pigeon shooting. There were, I think, five cages,or 'traps', with a live pigeon in each. The trap door to each had a cord or 'line' attached to it going back to a'trapper'. The shooter called 'pull' and the trapper 'pulled' a line to release a pigeon.Hence 'shooting down the line'. Vic. Yes you are correct the first traps were old top hats These shoots began in the early percussion period and reached their height in the late 1800,s in the breech loading period with the law passed by parliament live pigeon shooting from traps became illegal in 1924 Enclosed is a image of a pigeon shoot notice the umpire situated above the crowd so he good see everything Feltwad
