Basically are there any pitfalls for a complete novice to consider .

Is it using a memory card same as a camera and is infoiormation downloaded the same

Will I have to have a DVD burner installed on my computer to transfer to disc

Is it good or are there anybetter ones out there for this price range? :good:

Hey 'deadeye ive' ,

I recently bought a SONY DCR-HC47 which is similar to the one you are thinking of buying. There are a load of associated costs when buy the camera like this as I found out afterwards. At the time I bought mine I thought it would be a matter of plugging the USB cable from the camera into the PC and just transferring photos and videos over, however no such luck I'm afraid, I then found out that Sony had a special type of cable called a SONY i.Link cable to download videos from the camera to the PC, went to the Sony Centre and they didn't have one, didn't know much about it, it would take 2 weeks to order one and would cost around 110 euros, so i went off and done some research on the internet and found out that the Firewire IEE 1394 was the same thing as SONY i.Link, but I didn't have a fire wire connection on the PC. I then had to go off to PC world and get a Firewire PCI card and firewire cable and installed it myself this cost 60 Euro.So that solved the video problem.

I then took my memory card out of the digital camera thinking it would work in the DV camera and it was the wrong size so I had to go off and get a 1Gig Memory Stick PRO Duo card which cost me 50 euro, they can be upto and over 100 euro in some places.

And you'll need a DVD burner if you want to transfer stuff onto DVDs.

So there are a load of associated costs with this kind camera however DV Cameras are more user friendly to use than the minidiscs or HDD cameras,

Hope you got all that!

And its a steal at that price considering what your going to spend afterwards!

The simple answer is that one doesn't have a DV connector, this means you can't take the video off the camera onto your PC digitally. The previous post about "Firewire" or "ilink" cables, that's what plugs into the DV connector so you can easily transfer the video to your PC and then edit it.

With the one you list you would have to have a video capture card or system as well, and you'd loose quality as well as control over the camera while editing etc.

For a few pounds more you can get a camera which has "DV" "Firewire" or "ilink" port. I don't know how modern your PC is so I wouldn't have a clue if you had firewire capability or not. You can buy an addon card for literally £15 delivered if you need to add one, the install is simple if you can wire a 13amp plug you can add a card like that to your PC.

If you want any help or advice on this feel free to PM me, I'd be happy to help.
