Ferret Master
Hi, I haven't shot the rugby club for a couple of weeks but I was told that lots of damage was taking place on the pitches and could I please do something about it... fast. Not a problem was my reply. So we turned up at around 7pm on Saturday. There are lots of grass pitches but also plenty of long grass for the bunnies to hide in. As a result they are quite hard to stalk into .22 air rifle range. The rugby club is swarming with young rabbits but they aren't dopey when it comes to human predation and they only need a wary older bunny to stamp its back legs and they are off like a shot. I was there strictly on pest control as the numbers needed keeping in check. I shot one in a group of about five or six. I was going to pop off its mates as well but I thought I had only wounded this one as it was doing a lot of running around for a headshot rabbit so I ran over and dived on it. It was actually shot through both eyes so I blame the nerves characteristic of young rabbits. As it got darker Dad decided to drive me around so I could shoot from the open window of the car as the rabbit's have no fear of cars around the car park area. The old man's not up to doing much at the moment as he fell from a step ladder on Friday and slashed his chest open on a metal spike on a post. He will have a scar at least one and a half ft long. Anyway back to the bunnies. We drive around the perimeter of the car park and before long I was able to shoot a young one near the hedge. We then drove up the drive and after passing Dad the gun he managed to hit a rabbit about 15m to his right. We then drove down the drive again and I shot another near the pond which as it was a bit bigger went down with only a back flip. Another circuit of the car park and I shot the final rabbit, another young one. I'm not a huge fan of taking little rabbits and I did spare a few the size of mice that Dad couldn't see in the gloom. SHHHH However there are masses of them and considering I only took 22 bunnies from the area between August and March which decimated their numbers back then, the numbers have exploded and all the buries are occupied. Bring on the frosty mornings ferreting. Sorry for the quality of the image as it was taken at night inside in the sink using my mobile. I was still outside at half 11 gutting the bloomin' things. The ferret's enjoyed the smallest 2 as a nearly midnight snack though. The rest went in the freezer. I used my Air Arms S410k .22 with an AGS scope and Harris bipod. Well done and thank-you for reading this far. FM

Ferret Master
He's doing fine now thanks. He was VERY lucky. He did go into shock and his blood pressure dropped but he was lucky not to puncture his lungs or stomach. FM :o
