Lamping ! .....more like Rainmaking

I was out last night for a nice sit up before a proper lamping session. In the field for 7:30pm perfect timing I thought.

I decided to put a little bait out to draw them from cover and onto a freshly cut grass field.

Straight ahead - the white stick - in the centre of the shot, by the hedge - is the bait marker - it also has a few nails in it to hang bait off the ground (at fox nose height)

There was a nice breeze blowing left to right and where I was plotted on a bale 80 yards from the bait my scent was going to dead ground - great.

I set up expecting to take a shot from 80 yards to 150 ish depending on where the fox showed.

I'd seen a fox here two nights before but he didn't hang around and was straight into cover and I never saw him again that night.

I did have to contend with doppy dog walkers appearing 200yards away from the footpath and trying to get into my field - luckily the farmer had wired the gate shut and made it numpty proof. It didn't stop them rattling the gate for 5 minutes though ! Yes they appeared at 8:30pm - just before prime time - their fox terrier running under the gate where I was expecting a fox to appear from !

Once they had gone I could concentrate again on the job in hand - then the rain started, gently at first and then heavier - once it got a bit too much to be plotted on a bale I decided to move under a tree to my left. I did not want all my kit soaked prior to the lamping session ahead.

Just as I moved 2 yards from the bale a fox appeared from the left heading to the bait - he looked straight at me.... I froze on the spot.

He carried on and I was able to move back slowly and raise the rifle for a "benchrest shot" off the bale. Down he went.

After that the rain got heavier and heavier and I had to call it a night.

Great to be out for a few hours and get one, I'll be back there soon.

Cheers
