keepers friend
HI GENTS I HAVE JUST BOUGHT MY FIRST PIGEON MAGNET. FROM A GUN SHOP IN NORTHALLERTON.I THOUGHT IT WOULD WORK OK.BUT IT GOES LIKE THE ROTOR BLADES ON A HELICOPTER. CAN ANYBODY GIVE ME ANY INFORMATION ON HOW TO SLOW IT DOWN.ALSO IT ONLY RUNS FOR ONE HOUR OF A 12 VOLT BATTERY & THE MOTOR IS RED HOT.(IS THIS NORMAL). The Sniper
KF, If it is an original Pigeon magent why not contact the makers ?? If it is not, could you contact where you bought it from ? If it is one using a windscreen wiper motor on it, try moving the terminals, on the motor, about. I have one like this and if you swap them around you will find you will get slow and fast speeds out of it. As regards poor battery performance, how long is the wire from the battery to the rotor ? The longer the wire , the greater the resistance , that is, less power getting to the rotor. 10' of wire should do the trick. Plus the wire on it may be of inferior quality and may need replacing. If it is a wiper style motor try slightly undoing the screw on the end of the motor itself, for better battery performance. Apparently some tests have been done and the 'experts' say that 42 rpm is a good average. Time it and see what you get...............................don't get dizzy though Hope this helps. RAMMER BURT
hi peps my ford fiesta home made pigeon magnet will run for 6/7 hours on a12amp hour bat ,as for getting red hot sounds like the +12 and 0v are the wrong way round my will run all day and is still cold,if the wire was to thin from the batt the wires will get hot, mine from batt to magnet are 32/02 rated at 9/11amp's the motor only takes 3amps on start up then 1.5 amps running,i put a d.v.m in line with batt and magnet to see how long the batt would last and at what rate the magnet would spin, ford fiesta have a 3.1 turn speed escort's are 4.2 so you need a speed controler, hope this helps,p.s dont run your motor to long if it's getting red hot or the winding's will burn out ok. Cranfield
If the shop from which you bought it, isn,t too far away, take it back. Something isn,t right and its their responsibility to sort it out. If you fiddle with it too much, you might invalidate any guarantee. Also its fair to say, that while we tend to refer to all rotary decoy devices as "Magnets", the one you have may not be a true Magnet, but a brand made by someone else. It helps to post the actual name of the product, then if someone else has the same make and model, they can comment.
webber
KF Cranfield advise about your consumer rights is correct, but something is not right here. You have not actually stated how many RPM the rotor is doing. Can you load the machine with 2 dead birds and give it a spin, mark one bird in some way to make it easy to identify as it goes round. count how many times the marked bird goes round in say 30 seconds and the double the number. Please report the figure back. It is possible, although not likeley that the motor is 6 volts not 12, have a look to see if the motor has been stamped. Did you buy the battery from the shop, or is it one that you just had or bought cheap or borrowed etc. Dont just assume that the battery that you have is 12volts, some batteries are 24volt, and would there fore cause the problem. Try to find some one with a volt meter and the knowledge of how to use it, and check the battery voltage; please report. I doubt that the motor is actually faulty, these thing usually either work or dont. I would check out all of the above before I go marching into the shop, because if you have done something wrong, like the battery; they need not necessarily either undertake any repairs , replacement or refund. Post more facts. webber

kdubya
If its the 99 quid rotor from norhallerton guns? then its the same as mine mine seems to slow for me? batt lasts 3 and 1/2 hours before it gives up the ghost, must admit to rarely giving mine an airing, to heavy? if your close to me you are welcome to try my rotor out with your batt and see what happens ? I would suggest you "wiper" motor is drawing far to many amps hence the heat from the batt and short run down time? cheers keith
Mark E
I recently purchased a magnet lookylikey, and run it on a 12v 17amh battery (new). I ran it pretty much all day the other day, got it home to recharge it and the charger told me that the battery was nearly 60% charged (ie I'd only drained 40% of the power). Not sure if this helps you or not , but it's a comparison anyway! Good luck sorting the prob! Mark
The Sniper
Keepers Friend, The more I hear about your rotor the more I suspect that the screw on the end of the motor is in too far. Apparently this screw regulates some sort of drag/hindrance on the motor and is, I think, causing it to heat up, and use too much battery power. Let us know how you go on please. RAMMER BURT
the screw in the end of the worm drive takes out the backlash, that's the only draw back of worm drives it has to be set up spot on or will not work properly it adjust's the amount of play in the spindle
The Sniper
Keepers friend, Just the same problem I had. Now all you have to decide is where to put the rotor in the decoy pattern, and whether or not to use it on a bare drilled field ( doesn't seem to work for me yet ) or on standing crops. Good shooting whatever.
