We are thinking of getting 2 lots to plant in our woods where cover is a bit short during the colder weather to try and hold the birds. Any other recommendations to add? Walker570 Posted February 4, 2020 Report Share Posted February 4, 2020 Don't forget that many of these shrubs spread and get very thick, almost impassable for dogs even. Include a few hawthorne as you can eventually lay these (in the direction you normally beat the wood of course) We coppiced a load of nut and sycamore in a wood laying them in rows down the normal beating direction and the weeds etc grew through them providing lots of cover which held birds but was easy to knock out. The trees then grew up again providing further cover. Pheasants getting up tended to rise quickly to the canopy so providing some good birds, instead of going out low.
