Hammergun
An old 2-stroke engine with lots of oil in the mixture and a length of pipe from the exhaust poking down a rat hole works wonders!!
Yorkshire Pudding
I'm with you HG . A smoker is the best way to bolt rats . It doesnt need digging out or get tired ! all the best yis yp
shore_shot
thank you , i at the moment use a chain saw with out the blade on with a bit of pipe but i have found out that after use if you dig out u find a lot dead due to carbo ,i have small jills but find it unfair to use ferrets at this time of year due to doe,s in the nest putting up such a fight anyone know at all about smoke bombs i have heard they are good and silent ?? thank you for your replies
tody27
Use fireworks I am not sure if its strictly legal but that is what I use. Stick a good old roman candle down the hole. Cover it with a breeze block and stand on the breeze block. If you have put the firework down far enough you will hear a satisfying deep hollow sound. DUM DUM DUM as the rocket goes off. Coloured smoke will seep out around the area, and hopefully if all has gone successfully the odd rat or two will wonder out of the a hole in a daze- slow enough to quickly knock it off with a drainpipe If you have a terrier at hand use it to cover any quick escaping rats. tody

Pigeon_decoyer
The best thing i like to use is a foam fire extingwisher (sorry bout spelling), give a few sprays down the holes and wait a couple of seconds and they will boundle out! Hammergun
You can get smoke pellets from your local plumber's supplies.
Yorkshire Pudding
After the foam fire extingwisher post , reminds me of the time when i borrowed Jumbo the elephant from chester zoo. I took the said elephant to where the rabbits live ( a warren i think there called ) and got Jumbo to suck some water up through his big trunk . I then got Jumbo to put his trunk down the rabbit hole and blow water into it . The rabbits came flying out , they were very wet ! I would think this method will also work for rats ! all the best yis yp
ernyha
YP does it have to be an Indian elephant or an African one or are they both as good?
Yorkshire Pudding
Ern lol , Personally i don't think it makes any difference , but saying that Jumbo was an African elephant ! all the best yis yp
Pigeon_decoyer
The other way i recon that could work is get a hosepipe and put it on full power and post that down the hole, that way it should blast them out their holes! PD
remytherussell
Sorry Yorkie but the elephant must be Indian. African elephants are very wild and untrainable. (I expect Eug will put me down again!!.... ) RTR
remytherussell
If its relevent, I remember while on holiday in Sri Lanka some locals had a pet porcupine that they used to catch rats.
Fisherman Mike
some locals had a pet porcupine that they used to catch rats. I had one once and tried it on the rats but he was too scared to go down the hole... Spineless infact.. YP's elephant is best idea but best to put some thick socks on him to keep the noise down. By the way do you know why Elephants have got big ears? A. Because noddy wouldnt pay the ransom!!!
remytherussell
Mike, spineless, very funny They actually send them under the building which are mostly on stilts and also into undergrowth and the guys stand round with sticks to club the rats, and snakes if they come out. Wonderful country, Sri Lanka, I recommend it for a holiday, very cheap. regards RTR
ratcatcherreed
we do the same but for rabbits when the ferrets dont feel like or cant be ***** to work. we chuck a few smoke pellets. ( i dunno where u get em from but we used to use em in green house to kill bugs) n they work like a charm silent and they pour out such creamy smoke its almost impossible to see through. and wait for the nets to get full Reed (16)
Adamo
Using a 2 stroke engine is fair enough but when a terrier is on the go it spends the majority of its time with its head near the hole. Ive seen my dogs with their **** poking out of a hole and wouldnt be too chuffed if it got carbon monoxide poisoning after prolonged use. I was horrified when I seen that Fred Carter video, working terriers put a lot of trust in you and to do that for them to get better results, well your not being honest with them. I like getting in there with them digging and tearing and they respect you more for it so get your mits dirty lads.
