wymberley
Have always wondered why. Other than an attempt to maintain the black art, does anyone happen to know why this is?

London Best
Didn’t there used to be some excuse that muzzle velocity was always a theoretical figure because you could not measure velocity at the muzzle as no distance had yet been travelled? One can understand that, but what is wrong with whole numbers. Or is someone simply being obtuse?

Or is someone simply being obtuse? Years ago, Eley always quoted an “observed velocity” over 20 yards. In other words, an average velocity over that distance. Some of the foreign makers used to quote muzzle velocities, which, of course, sounds better because it’s faster.

wymberley
I can imagine some little old Belgian in Liege in 1914 called Fraikin working in a cramped shop and who didn't quite have room to set up a 3 metre distance so had to settle for 2.5. Guest cookoff013
its to stop the muzzle blast distorting the result. at that distance, i think the numbers got more consistent at that distance and proved better.
