So...........there we were out last night with jazzy.

Letting him have his usual run around before we do a bit of training.

Off he scampers to the hedgerow.............

I see him sort of "hop", Sit jump..................and yep............you guessed it..

His back end and belly get caught up on the barbed wire before I can blow a stop whistle.......

End result..........1 jazzy howling and yelping............I lancslad running over rough field telling him to stay....his back end on the wire and him yelping away...

When I get to him he has come off the wire.............Keep on telling him to stay.......fur and all sorts on the barbs.....

Clam head on...........I take him and run my hands around his body checking for blood........nothing showing....I then roll him over expecting to see some nasty wounds running hands around back legs and belly.

Result - A Couple of "nicks" in his skin.....

End of session and we are back home with the doggy medi kit that I have made up for when I go beating...........Some betadine and a clean and hes good as new.........

Moral of the story..................It can happen any time......not just when you are beating........Take your first aid kit with you....

My young pointer got hung up on barbed wire last season out on a fox drive. I had to physically lift her of :drinks: there were three gashes across her stomach but she was still keen to go and didnt need to go to the vet or anything . I had heard 2 shots before I heard her howling and yapping so was worried she had made contact with an injured fox :whistling:

i saw a goat that leapt through a barbed wired hedge with some tw#ts dog in hot pursuit the goat literally left her stomach behind (she gutted herself)it is apalling stuff and no other industry would be allowed to spread it all over the country,it is a lazy way of stock fencing and has no place in modern farming imho.

Barbed wire should be banned from use, there is no need for it at all.

barbed wire is useful stuff, banning it would be stupid.

Useful for what exactly?

Apart from ripping animals apart, and roadblocks in Northern Ireland.

There are other alternatives now rather than the barbaric form of barbed wire.

nothing keeps cattle in like barbed wire, you can go electric but as soon as anything falls on it or the battery goes flat then they are out and thats far more hazardous especially if they get hit by cars at night.

Any smooth wire they simply rub against and push down same with post and rails etc. Its why you need your dog to stop on command. I've seen it and its horrible seeing them get hung up bad enough when its someone elses but when its your own the real panic sets in.

I can see the benefit of using barbed wire to hold cattle but I cant see why the bottom two strands of wire cant be just smooth wire and the top one or two strands can be barbed.

My neighbours spaniel twisted himself around the bottom strand of a barbed wire fence and it took two of us to lift him and untwist him to free him. I then bought a Gerber multi tool which is just like a leatherman but with replaceable blades capable of cutting barbed wire.
