eugene molloy
Personally I'm unhappy at the idea of anyone just shooting woodies, perfectly edible beasties, and and lobbing them in the ditch. Ok you can't cook, but presumably you can read. So the instructions on a can of ready made Chicken Chasseur sauce, Beef casserole, or Spaghetti Bolognaise won't be beyond you. Simply de-breast the birds and use them as directed. I'm sure The Memsahib would appreciate you putting a meal on the table once in a while. The recipe for pigeon on leeks posted on this forum is great; you dont need to be Marco Pierre White to slice a bl--d-ng leek! If you shoot middling numbers, then de-breast them and place in the freezer. If you shoot a real hatful, get thee unto a game dealer. If you are near Brum a gunshop there will swop so many frozen birds for cartridges. But seriously, get your pinny on and give 'Er Indoors a break poor woman. My Old Man was no chef, but reckoned a man who couldn't feed himself was "Nobbut a babby". He could boil a spud and put a beef joint in the oven....so can you. RAMMER BURT
 saying that if you do put them in the local dicth at least the foxs will have a nice feast,if i shoot to many birds i will find a kestral's nest and put some out for them my local farmer was well chuffed with me doing my bit for humanity and all the young kestral's survived loverly
eugene molloy
Burt, The farmer may well think that way, but how about the keeper or shoot manager cottoning on to your feeding foxes? Oops! Eug

Ears
Red Stag 88. Cant say i have had stir fried pigeon but i have eaten a few cooked in other ways. Last saturday i only shot 11 but i had a call from a friend as i was shooting asking me for 6 pigeons for a pie. I managed to get him to take them all. And he bought me a pint. Went clay shooting on Sunday as they have moved away to better pastures.

KINGSHOOTER
when your getting around 100/150 pigeons in a weekend people tend to get sick of taking them off ya and in my eyes the more foxes i can shoot the better
ollie
I agree with you that the more foxes shot the better, but theres other ways of doing it. You can sell them to game dealers.

eugene molloy
Squintshot and Kingshooter, Please reconsider discarding your shot birds. Firstly it’s a gift to the antis. LACS are forever trying to find (i.e. plant) evidence of pheasant dumping; they got a lot of publicity in such a case recently on prime time TV that made shooting look bad; they’d be delighted to do the same with your woodpigeon. Secondly there have been a number of cases of members of the public finding heaps of discarded pigeons and being genuinely disturbed by the experience. Why upset them needlessly? And why put the farmer who gave you permission into the frame when complaints come in. I know one chap who lost the pigeon shooting on a 1100 acre farm near me for just that reason. I was delighted because I have it all now, exclusively. Thirdly it’s a waste of excellent and tasty meat. Using “I can’t cook” as an excuse is pretty lame. If you were a hunter in the US you’d get some pretty dusty responses believe me; they are very proud of their “I eat what I kill” tradition, rightly so. Lastly, firstly, and most importantly it’s a matter of sporting ethics; you can see the other guys in the forum don’t like the idea of you ditching your quarry, because it shows a lack of respect for the things you’ve killed. You obviously don’t get that point right now but think on; doing what you do may lose the respect that others have for YOU, and that may well have consequences. So, if only in your own interests, please reconsider. Kind regards, Eug
Browning
Eugene - I totally and utterly agree with your post - well said ! Squintshot and Kingshooter - If you have difficulty giving away whole birds, why not de-breast them first. I find that it's very easy to give away pigeon breast rather than pigeon "in the feather". Cheers, Browning
squintshot
Very profound Eug. Reading your post made me think and your right it is selfish i shall now try harder to find an outlet for me sport. I suggested the idea of my cooking dinner and after a course of expletives the general run of the reply was a no! Though with BBQ season know here it's my turn to don the apron, she may be a wizz in the kithen but she terrible on the BBQ front so i dare say i could sneak a wee bird on the grill.
