What is the exact score regarding .223 and deer? What exactly are the changes and when do they come into effect?

I am getting .223 and the farm I shoot has muntis etc. and some deer I understand - not found them myself.

Cheers all.

Oh. My advice - get both.

Mung

you will be able to shoot CWD and Munty's from october this year with your .223 as long as you have it covered on your FAC.

PELTMAN :)

And as long as you use appropriate bullets. i.e. Soft or hollow points

Oh I forgot to say that comes into force from 1st oct :/ , personally I'd go for the .243, even using the .223 would require optic adjustments as you are more likely to use v-max or bt's on fox, especially at night time where this build of bullet allows for more safety with less chance of ricochets (I'm not saying they are more safe as the back stop makes the bullet safe, just a bit more in built knowledge) and psp's or 60 grain bonded on small deer.

Being a newbie to FAC and not fully understanding all the nonsense that goes with it, it seems to me that there should be a set "table" of exactly what you can / cannot shoot with each calibre - so, if this were the case and you had .223, as soon as 1st October came you could take Munti and CWD without any form filling or variations required.

I still await my FAC and the "words" (if any), although the more I look into this the more I believe I will actually be restricted upto my eyeballs.

I am not sure if I have asked this on this thread or another, but if you have .22LR for "vermin and ground game" can you shoot a fox (assuming that it's say 20 yards away from you so as not to spark that debate off again :/ ) or do you need "fox" appearing on your ticket notwithstanding that fox is vermin.

to add to that my rimfire has pest control written on it as well!

I think they like to make the tickets as hard to understand as possible whether that is to cover their backs and yours is a different matter. I've never heard of anyone getting into trouble because they didn't know for license purposes fox weren't classed as vermin, or rather that some constabularies consider them vermin and some don't! Its like they want to make it a legal minefield it would be much simpler were they to print for fox or not for fox on tickets.

no

Didn't think so, but then I pose the question of when did a fox stop becoming vermin?

What about squirrel? Or do I need a squirrel variation and the words added.

(The squirrel would be in the freekin ground before any members from the PW official health and safety executive pipe up)

Heh, don't shoot the messenger

If it helps, I have the word Fox against .223 and 6.5 but not against .22lr.

My FAC is up for renewal in the new year so I will ask for it to be added to .22lr as I have been asked to shoot foxes in an area which is close to houses.

FWIW Deer are considered vermin by some people, but you can't shoot them with your rimfire either. . .

Grey Squirrel is on the list of VERMIN :good:

The term “vermin” is not defined in law, but it may include destructive species that cause damage to crops or property such as rabbits, mink, stoat, weasel, brown rat, and grey squirrel, as well as some birds such as wood pigeon, rook and crow.

As the date rapidly approaches, I wonder how many people will be sending their tickets in to have the condition added?

And what affect that will have on the already snowed under firearms departments?

Having moved back to Wales from Scotland, i had Deer on my Ticket for the .222, and i am getting my visit next monday, so it will be interesting to see what my FEO says,(sent my tickets off in July for change of address!!!!) as i still have Stalking in Scotland and Muntjac stalking here so will want Deer left on there for the .222.
