Old Boggy
Did anyone watch this on BBC4 tonight ? Some fantastic footage of the old paddle steamers mainly working on the Clyde and Bristol channel. However, it did show briefly the Medway Queen which among others was used for around seven crossings at Dunkirk. I well remember as a kid in the fifties travelling on the Medway Queen which operated between Herne Bay Pier (Kent) and Southend pier (Essex). The highlight was going down to the engine room and watch the massive pistons working. I think that the return trip at the time was 5/-d (5 shillings i.e. 25p in today`s money), although if I recall, we sometimes used to go across to Southend, spend the day at the Kursal funfair and catch the boat from Southend in the evening where it travelled to it`s mooring at Strood. We then caught a train back to Herne Bay. Happy days. The Medway Queen was towed into Ramsgate harbour a few years ago where I couldn`t resist visiting her and recalling all those wonderful memories and attach a few photos of our visit. No doubt some have also been on the Waverley which still operates around the UK. We managed to get a ticket aboard the Waverley when it visited the Isle of Wight a few years ago. My recollection of that visit was the way the Waverley listed dramatically to port when everyone aboard moved to that side to wave goodbye at the end of Ryde pier. Sorry, posted in wrong section. henry d
I was watching the paddle steamer Waverley yesterday along with the African Queen, a royal navy battleship, a trawler, a Rhine River commercial barge and a speedboat on our local pond. Although it doesn't interest me it was rather fun and added to a pleasurable walk. Only managed to get a photo of the trawler, the Waverley was coming out of the water, the African Queen was too fast for a good picture and the rest were too far away. Scully
Fabulous stuff! My OH is a huge fan of the ‘sewing bee’ on BBC, so I have to sit through it. 🙂 But what has caught my eye in the outside shots, is a little boat ( not bulky enough to be a tug, but I could be wrong ) which seems to be permanently lashed to the quayside. I am smitten by it and want to live on it!
