danro
Hi All I sent a letter below (OK snippet below) to my local Firearms Officer who has in the past provided both a superb service and helpful advice. "As things stand I have a Lanber shotgun on my certificate marked as "on loan" from another Shotgun certificate holder Shaun. Shaun owns the shotgun but I have been storing it for him. Shaun has decided to sell his Lanber to a friend of mine Richard who, obviously, is another Shotgun certificate holder. My query is how do we do the paperwork? My certificate has the Lanber with me but I obviously do not own it. Shaun owns the gun but does not have it on his certificate any more and we would like to transfer it to a new owner Richard. Do I transfer the gun back to Shaun for him to transfer to Richard? Or can I transfer directly to Richard even though I have it "on loan" My concern being it would appear from the certificates paper trail I would have sold a gun I do not own. Is this something that would raise a concern for you or are you mainly interested in who has what gun and where it is? I'm sorry for the questions but firearms and "getting it right" are a huge concern for all three of us. Many thanks in advance With best regards" Unfortunately I have not heard anything on this occasion. Can someone provide some advice? Many thanks
Scully
If it’s on your ticket then that’s all that matters. As long as there is a paper trail for that shotgun, the police aren’t interested in whether you loan, sell or gift it. It’s the traceability which matters. mgsontour
As above; it's traceable so job done in my eyes
Imperfection
Be warned. Keep a copy of all emails, interactions and letters with licensing concerning gun transfers. Two years ago i bought a 45-70 rifle but was faulty so returned it to dealer who inturn returned it to the importer Edgar Bros. I got a one for one variation for another 45-70 so i could collect new one. Collected rifle, informed licensing but this time i did it by email as apparently they prefer this rather than paper. I received their automated reply saying they're received it and to accept gun transfer is complete their end. This is the crucial bit-because im anally retentive about paperwork i printed my email/auto-reply with my details, serial number, dates, dealer etc. Three weeks later the dealer (a friend) rang me to say licensing were flapping about them not being aware the 45-70 rifle was registered to me. Their system 'lost' my notification but i had a complete paper trail for the rifle with the all important email saying so. The rifle was floating in cyberspace. Scully
Good advice. I’m fortunate in that my licensing authority is only 15 mins away, so I can often hand in personally when in town, any relevant correspondence. I also keep copies. danro
Cheers chaps. I'll take the advice and keep a good paper trail, complete with a copy of receipt. Then I can transfer the gun from my ticket in one go. I too have been bitten in the past with other peoples failures and my paper trail has proven it's worth. Much appreciated for your comments. You should really get a letter of consent from the owner of the gun stating you have permission to sell/ dispose of the gun in question totally completes the paper trail
