Old farrier
Anyway back on topic I wanted a ou semi pistol grip altered and the amount of cast wasn’t achievable with the stock bolt so I had a new stock made and they re drilled it in the appropriate place that was well to the side of the stock it transformed the gun and the shooting experience with it

The reason I ask is that I am toying with buying a Yildiz wildfowler but surprisingly they don’t offer a left hand option. So whatever I bought would have to be altered. That is fine but I have mixed experience with OUs. Worked fine on a best quality highlander but was a disaster with a beretta whitening which wouldn’t hold the cast. In the latter case it was my daughters gun and we went for a silver pigeon with factory cast on stock. I guess it depends on the quality of the walnut so perhaps not a given in every case. A lot will depend on how the gun is stocked . If its conventionally stocked with screws through the top and bottom straps ,then usually no problem . If its a stock bolted gun then there can be difficulties , some have a metal reinforcing tube in the hand wrist which has to be removed and later refitted .There is also greater risk of gapping around the straps .Some times reheading up will be needed and you have to accept that it will go as far as it will safely go and no more . Then comes the wood , some will bend quite quickly and easily , others won't go as far as you want and can to come back over time . Setting is always done at the owners risk , I've set/cast a lot in my time with only one break /crack , but then if I didn't think it would go or the stock was old, worn etc I wouldn't attempt to do so .I have also refused to try on newer guns as well as I did not think the wood grain would stand the stress of doing so . Take advice from someone experienced in casting /setting stocks and see how it goes

Why not get an adjustable comb fitted? In 40 years of shotgun shooting I bought my first a couple of years back and you can set them up perfectly.
