While I'm certainly not blaming the paramedics for their actions (there's only one person to blame and that's the vile creature throwing punches). But it amazes me that people don't legally defend themselves, the law is very clear that you don't have to wait to be assaulted before you can use reasonable force to defend yourself.

Whether they were scared of getting in trouble themselves, or it's fear of dealing with violence itself I don't know, but I certainly wouldn't have stood there and let someone smack me.

If they noted that they were “pre-emptively defending themselves” and punch the woman threatening them before she hit them, they may not be charged under criminal charges, but they would in absolutely no doubt be up before their governing body for their profession and very very likely struck off  for such actions.

Can just imagine it now “Paramedic turns up and punches patient in face”.

I'm not saying they should have punched her, but they could have got a grip of her as she was becoming threatening and even not then, once she'd taken a swing at them. The guy stood their and allowed her to walk right up to him and then hit him. Again not criticising them, they're restraint in dealing with her was impressive, however they would have been absolutely justified if they'd used force long before she seriously hurt one of them.

They would absolutely have been suspended for such actions… a member of the public would undoubtedly film it and put it on YouTube, they would be dragged before their professional body for a fitness to practice tribunal etc etc.

Even with new legislation making it an offence to assault an emergency worker, there is very minimal action taken when assaults on staff happen.

Maybe so, but ultimately there's no way an employer could sack or discipline them for using reasonable and minimal force necessary to defend themselves from attack and I know what I'd rather between facing a possible disciplinary or a serious life changing injury. Like I said earlier, the only person I blame was the person who made the physical attack, but I would have handled it differently.

At least 2 years in prison, 🤔 but that does not help the medic who will be off work and suffer the trauma and require medical assistance for years, a broken eye socket !!!,

It is certainly NOT something new. In the 1970's and 1980's you could pretty much guarantee 3 or 4 calls to A & E every Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Probably why so many Bobbies married Nurses  !   The  difference was the relatively recent CCTV did not cover the cubicles, so offenders could be er.........'restrained' .😄
