Just finished breasting about 20 of the pigeons i shot yesterday, and the crop contents were, beechmast , acorns , beans, dirty wheat , (stubbles) clean wheat ,(game feeders) wheat with red dressing on, red hawthorn berries, and clover.

There was plenty fat on the breast meat of all the birds , not surprising with the amount of food available to them.

I always think pigeon meat is at its best in autumn, it seems to have a different taste to any other time of year.

Does anyone else think this ?.

Hi hitman,

I don;t know how you managed 20 woodies? I have been sitting about for days with not a pigeon in sight!!!!

well, I got one the other day, nice and fat, but still only one. I seem to manage more rabbits out of my hide than pigeons.

One of the reasons for this is that I have to sit in fields with the wrong stuff sown. Unfortunately the fields where I can see whole flocks of the skyrats (rape) is also full of pheasants and partridges so there is no shooting on those right now :drool:

SO tell me hitman, in which fields have you got them?

BTW< whereabout are you?

Pleased that at least one of us is keeping Northumberland and unforgiving place for woodies
