Rough shoot

Was invited for a mooch about the boundaries on the farm I shoot over today and it turned into a cracking days sport.

Met up with my mate at just gone nine and while the dogs warmed up we planned our route around the farm and agreed if the opportunity arose we we decoy pigeons and leave the game alone. After visiting the couple of fields he had seen pigeons feeding on we decided to leave the pick up in the middle of the farm and walk up a few miles of spinneys and hedge rows.

His spaniel is a great little hunter and has a knack of hunting at just the right pace. We first walked up a river side hedge where the only three birds we saw flushed on the wrong side where we could not get a clear shot. At the end of the of the feild was a small triangle of rough grass that we were going to cut off until my lab started to whimper and on being sent in flushed six pheasants, three of which ended up in the bag.

We moved to a spinney and covered each side as the dogs worked the cover adding a rabbit and a pigeon to the bag, with me missing two seemingly easy cocks.

Back to the pick up to rest the dogs, grab a cup of coffee and smoke a ciggie in the sun then off again along stream side hedges fringed with brambles and dying nettles. The dogs worked brilliantly ( running in a couple ot times but they arent feild trial winners ) and we found enough birds to be happy with our lot and call it a day at half one.

Total bag was two pigeons, six pheasants, one rabbit, a woodcock and two mallard. Not a massive day but enough for us, we were out, had a good laugh and enjoyed working the dogs and the weather.

Dog is as ever asleep at my feet, gun cleaned and away, birds cleaned and all is good with the world
