Rooks - real world experience

Recommended Posts

So after posting a few weeks ago about falling rook numbers - it appears we have had a fair number "move in"
I have been catching these in the Larsen and Clams but releasing as i'm not convinced of damage done to my crops. Do they take other birds eggs ? I know thats not reason to cull now - BUT as every day is a school day does anyone have any real world experience on them please?

I think they will take eggs and chicks but are more opportunist than Crows that deliberately hunt them. We used to control numbers by shooting branchers but I lost the desire to do so many years ago. These days I tend to leave them alone unless they are causing a problem on drillings etc so maybe the answer varies from farm to farm depending upon crops etc.

My understanding is that their favourite food item are the larvae of daddy long legs [leather jackets] which are an agricultural pest, I love being near a rookery in the early spring.

Hello, Note the word near and not underneath the trees 🤔😀

You spotted that 😄. Rookeries remind me of my childhood and the village church, once established they will use the same site for 100yrs, just adding a few sticks at nesting time. I also had a pet rook when I was a child, so yes I'm fond of them

Hello, My farmer friends do not seem to worry much about any thing including hoards of rooks , in fact although it will not affect me as years ahead a lot of their land is going for a new Reservoir same as many farms in this Area, it is going to be bigger than Farmoor 1 and 2 , Billions of £s and 10 years to do, Compensation payments are going to be mind boggling 🤔, another family i know will loose their entire farm of around 800 Acres, Yet most water will go to London🤔
