I normally let the birds tell me when they don’t like something, if they start to hesitate then I go out and have a tidy up. I also find that around 17.00 they tend to care less if something isn’t right, almost like they are desperate to feed before they go to roost.

Brilliant and THANKS for your reply Ben , I now know what to do the next time when I get a bag of that size  :drinks:

I never realised those birds of prey get through so many pigeons, only heard of it in recent years (the large numbers they take). I see the likes of Anthony Poolman who shoots huge numbers saying they sell all theirs steel shot for birds of prey, but amazed at the demand for tens of thousands a year!

A buzzard pinched one of my dead birds the other day, it had flown about 400 yards before dropping dead in the middle of the field. The buzzard took it away, for which I was grateful, as incoming birds were tending to decoy to it and I was considering have to trudge over there in the blazing sun to get it.

Silly me , I thought you were talking about the Buzzard flying 400 yds and then dropping dead , I need to pay far more attention , was what my ole teacher used to say when I was looking at the different birds in the trees outside our classroom windows .

Like many others I have also found where Pigeons would divert to a single one that had planed out and totally ignore your so called lifelike set of decoys , why this should be ? , I can only guess , but I am not sure if anyone know the true answer .   MM

Sounds like an outstanding day was had! An enjoyable thread to read, I love the honesty where the dogs and the training are involved too, many would happily take the credit themselves so fair play to you (and obviously the other half for putting in the leg work) 👍🏻
