Starting pistol legality.

My youngest son is a gaming sound engineer and wants a realistic sounding starting pistol to 'fire' in a room to get the reflected echo's right, that's way above my pay grade lol.

Google results produce confusing (for me) various results depending on what type they are. He will be here later and may be able to explain what he wants better than me, and would likely better understand any information you chaps could offer if anyone knows the difference.

I still don't know what type don't require an FAC as that would take too long to arrange. Help would be appreciated, particularly if anyone knows the different sounds they make.

He lives in Middlesborough and I think he needs it in a studio so its not as simple as me getting one to use here.

You can download sound effects, then add reverb to whatever you want. If as you say he's a sound engineer it will be simple enough.

I have just spent 30 seconds on google and come up with loads.

The gaming company he works for might get sued or other legal issues, and that might mean the original owner gets credits - whereas Andy gets the only audio credits.

He'll be reading this thread soon - thanks all.

My limited experience of recording rifle shots is from GoPro and similar, the shots dont sound very good and nothing like the live sound. I know sound recording engineers can mess about with speeds, reverb, pitch etc

If you want it to sound like a gun then you will need a blank firing pistol and not a starting pistol. Starting pistols typically have a more of a crack because they usually use .22 shorts whereas a blank firing pistol normally use 8mm, 9mm or .380 blanks. Anyone over the age of 18 can legally buy one from a gun shop with proof of age and address but they must be brightly coloured usually orange , a realistic coloured one can be legally owned and purchased for theatrical purposes so your son probably falls into that category, if he does then he will also need to produce evidence for it use at the point of purchase.

Thanks Doug, he's clued up with soundwave sweeps, reverbs etc but the company only use their own sound effects - he has a group meeting next weekend where he'll record the harmonics in each room of their buildings doing various sounds.

Ive got one you could borrow but i know your a fair way off from me. Or do you have a PCP ? that might be suitable, just dry fire with the mod off ?

That was my thoughts to do here but hes not got his recording kit with him and mine is FAC so he can't take that. He has read this topic now.

That looks like the way to go thanks Bob.

A .380 blank commonly used in western style revolvers, a 9mm blank commonly used in modern semi automatic pistols and a real 9mm round (inert) for comparison. As you can imagine they all make a very similar sound.

Thanks Ian, That might be why he bought the only one they had left. I've sent him a message to cancel that front venting one - he's driving home ATM.

He has some office time in the coming week to use it for his own sound effects library so will accept he has to surrender it in the new year because he won't get another in time.

EDIT: he has now cancelled the front venting one and is ordering a side venting one. Thanks very much for the help chaps.

All of the Turkish ones were prohibited from sale about two months ago in readiness for the ban.

He's since been advised of that thanks - it seems some online vendors didn't play ball with that.

But very ironically, someone at the firm has now indicated he shouldn't bring such a device to work! :big_boss:
