Cranfield
One of my US friends emailed me this story from one of his magazines. This bridge is on the Old Donner Pass Highway and has spectacular Sierra views and views of Donner Lake and Donner Pass on Route 80. A bear was walking across Rainbow Bridge (Old Hwy 40 at Donner Summit, Truckee) on Saturday when two cars also crossing the bridge scared the bear into jumping over the edge of the bridge. Somehow the bear caught the ledge and was able to pull itself to safety. Authorities decided that nothing could be done to help Saturday night, so they returned Sunday morning to find the bear sound asleep on the ledge. After securing a net under the bridge the bear was tranquilized, fell into the net, lowered, then woke up and walked out of the net. The moral of this story is, that when you think you have a big problem, take a nap and it all looks better in the morning.

Mungler
Great pictures. Question: It maybe the heartless accountant in me, but I look at these scenes and have a quick "tot up" of the cost. There's at least 5 people on the bridge and probably a team of professional climbers, rescuers and riggers below. Throw in a helicopter for good measure, the cost of closing the bridge for a day (the police to attend and cordon off, late deliveries, people not getting to work and so on) and ambulance cover in the event there is an accident and some park wardens in the event the bear gets fiesty and a vet if the bear is injured etc. Don't they shoot bears out there any more? Next time your in a road accident and you need to be cut out of a car, we'd need to close the road get the fire brigade, police ambulance. With probably 20-odd people, I'm thinking it may just be cheaper to shoot you. (well not you personally ) Don't worry i understand your point, but sometimes we have a responsibility to help out if we can, it doesn't always make sense to work by the cheque book. Fantastic story and a nice find

Fantastic story and a nice find Actually it is cheaper in real terms to rescue someone than let them die(or top them as they sit ) as it has been found that it costs around £1M per fire/accident death, sobering thought really. Fantastic story and a nice find The point is, we don't shoot / hunt people anyways (unless you live in Manchester). What if the animal was not a bear but say a fox?
