purdey
Getting my certificate soon and cant wait.I went clay shooting the other day and had a loook round the gunshop. The over and unders where pretty expensive but they had some cheap second hand side by sides.A friend of mine told me to stay clear of side by sides as they are no better than looking down the barrel of a tank. Im not the kind of person who is fussy about made to meassure because i would shoot with a muzzle loader if i had to.I just think side by sides are more classic. The question i am basically asking is what are peoples opinions on side by sides. Ban the Ban

jimdfish
i have spent fortunes on guns, semi's o/u's and the bets gum i have ever shot eith that i still use now is a1901 hammergun sxs. it all depends on what fits though. if you are comfortable you will shoot better
Mungler
I got a Zoli (hammerless sbs) from StuartP off this very forum - I think it was a couple of hundred quid. Anyways, the sight picture down the barrels was very very good for an SBS - it had a flat rib and so it was just like looking down my trap gun (12g over and under). My advice and I know I am right about this is pick one which has a flat rib that runs the length of the barrels and of course make sure the gun fits and comes to the shoulder nicely. Oh and don't touch a 2 trigger job.
purdey
Im a good shot with a o/u as the last time i went clay shooting i hit 50/75 but i did have some trouble with some of the high birds.I think side by sides just look more english.I think i will try one out before i buy one. I hope to go grouse shooting next year and most people use side by sides for that.
purdey
Just read the post by mungler.Whats wrong with two triggers?
vole
Had my sg cert a year and have tried them all except a pump.I mostly rough shoot, hauling my sorry behind several miles which I love to do.Have settled on sbs except when using my sb hushpower.Lighter, safe, easy load and unload.i hit just as many,or few clays as with an o/u or semi. You wont be unwelcome anywhere with one either.I too prefer the raised rib ones,my AYA Matador sight picture is very like an o/u.Only one shot short of a semi without fac too! Mungler
In this day and age no gun manufacturer makes a shotgun with 2 triggers and you would do well to ask yourself why.
purdey
I found a nice 12 s/s for £145 SECOND HAND.Im just waiting to get my certificate. How long does it normally take to get it proccesed and do police come round to your house? Mungler
Easy tiger, there are thousands of nice sbs out there for cheap money. Depending where you live (do be a love and fill out your forum profile) it will take upto 2 months and yes the application process requires them to come to your house and check your police records, medical records and speak to your referees. Plenty of info about the whole nine yards on this forum. Take a day or two to read in.
purdey
Two months, bloody hell.Do they have to go round to the referees house or do they just ring them up.Im paying them £50 i wish they would do it a bit quicker, althougth i did here that someone got theres processed in 6 days. ChrisNicholls
In this day and age no gun manufacturer makes a shotgun with 2 triggers and you would do well to ask yourself why. With the possible exception of AYA, Purdey, Holland and Holland, William Powell, Boss & Co, Cogswell & Harrison, Beretta (they still have a double triiger model), Arrieta. Just a bit of gun making knowledge among that lot, I could name many more that make double trigger guns.
vole
The feo who processed me said he turned a bloke down because his interview went badly.A few days later the guy murdered his wifes bit on the side.A near miss and a good reason for them to be sure who gets a cert.I think the big delays are not acceptable though, considering the cost. purdey
Oh bloody hell, you have found me out(just joking). What kind of questions do they ask you in interview and how long does it last
Devon Fox
Its a nice informal chat, mine was with me for an hour or so, obviously they will ask you about how often you drink, would anyone else have access to guns etc etc, straight forward, my feo Di porter if anyone knows her is lovely (she covers the mid Devon area), get some good biscuits in and get the kettle on, just be yourself they aint monsters and most of the hour was chatting about holidays,my dogs blaa blaa! Okay leaving aside the ridiculous guns that only the landed gentry and arabs buy, I didn't know that AYA and Beretta still made double trigger models. Pray tell, how many more thousand single trigger models are sold than the double trigger versions? And does anyone know of an A+ class shooter who uses one - apart from that fella that dresses like Cat Weezel who turns up at the shoot once a year..... Mungler
Are you mental? Will you go postal? What is the capital of Peru (although my mate was asked what was the capital of Equador) I have heard they can also throw in questions about the speed of laden swallows

I thought this thread was about side by sides? obviously the majority of guns sold are o/u and they all have single triggers. But side by sides? I would imagine AYA have the lions share of this market and virtually of their production have double triggers. A+ shooters will of course be using O/U's as that classification refers to clay shooting so not it's relevant, but seeing as you mention it, all the famous side by side users in days gone by and currently used double triggers. I'm just splitting hairs of course, but my point was to inform the original poster that there is nothing wrong in the least with double triggers. Baikal still make double trigger guns by the way. I have a double trigger AYA NO4 and i cannot fault it, it only took me about 4 cartridges to get used to the double trigger, i dont see what everyone always complains about with double triggers. And even when im using a single trigger gun i DONT pull the trigger once then pull the trigger guard! Double triggers are much more reliable and overall the guns cost less!
