Guest The Outlaw
I used M12 rawl bolts into engineering brick, 6 in the back and 4 in the concrette floor. If your floor is timber, check there are no pipes or cables under the floor and use coach bolts and extra timber under where you are bolting it. If the walls are "Cellcon" soft blocks under 20 newtons density I would check with the FEO because the Rawl bolts can split the blocks and are the minimum density blocks allowed in my area. I have heard people say they have had to put a plate on the other side of timber walls and an alarm on the building. I would think there are lots of threads on here covering every type of fixing. spynappels
Hi Russ, The bolts you need depend on the holes in the back of the cabinet, and whether you have easy access to where you want the cabinet to go and whether you can move it easily by your self. The most bomb-proof way of doing it is to use drop in anchors. You need to mark the holes on the wall through the holes in the back of the cabinet. Take the cabinet away and drill the hoes in the wall, making sure you use the correct size, i.e. for M10 bolts, use 12mm drill bit. Place the anchors in the wall, you can get ones with a slight lip to avoid them being pushed in too far. Use a rod or screwdriver to set the anchors, this just means knocking the wedge inside to the bottom of the anchor. This will give you a threaded insert anchor you can screw a normal high tensile bolt of the correct length into. The other way is to drill into the wall straight through the holes in the cabinet and use Thunderbolts or equivalent, but this is a one shot offer, you should not reuse them or the holes if you ever have to move the cabinet away from the wall for anything. The drop in anchors are a fully re-usable solution. I hope this helped. Stefan. btw, I sell anchors etc for a living, so I can vouch for my info. spynappels
Thunderbolts are great in some applications. However, they were never designed to be screwed back into the same hole after they had been completely removed. This is because they cut their own threads in concrete/masonry, and the large spaces between the "thread" are designed to allow good holding in the substructure. However, when the bolt is removed, the chances of it being re-inserted in the exact same thread is minimal, and you usually end up cutting a new thread in the same hole. This means there is not the same resistance to tearing out, as the substrate has been "cut" already. I know this is pedantic and that drop in anchors are belt and braces, and that some people think they are overkill for a Gun Cabinet, but if we as a company will not guarantee the holding power of thunderbolts that have been removed and re-inserted, I'd personally not use them if I thought they ever had to be removed and re-used. Of course, I'm not saying don't use them, that is an individuals own call. All I'm saying is that there are better options available and if anyone is as anal about fixing things down as I am, it might pay to explore them. I'll get off my soap box now, have a nice evening. Stefan.
