viking
hi all, (again) iv just got my new beretta 686e and im a bit confused with the safty, when only 1 dot is showing it fires the bottom cart first but will it only fire 1, and with the 2 dots showing iv believe it fires 2 shots but the top on first, is this correct, thanks, lee
Guest The Outlaw
No mate it should fire both barrels what ever way it is switched, the barrel selector is just that, top or bottom first then the other barrel next. I have an old Miroku that only fires one barrel when it is switched to top first and was told by a gunsmith there is a problem with it, as I will be getting it taken out to skeet and skeet (fixed choke) for coaching it doesnt bother me. benelli 1
The barrel selector does exactly what it says on the tin mate...it just selects which barrel you want to fire first...whichever one you chose it will fire that barrel first then the other barrel once the trigger is pulled again...cheers
mossy835
1 dot should fire the open barrel, and 2 dots should fire the choke barrel.
viking
rite thats understood, my next question then is what barrel should be fired first or if only firing one,
pin
Convention says bottom barrel first (one dot on a Beretta selector). I mix and match chokes depending on what I am doing, it's useful to be able to shoot some choke at a target that needs it by swapping the selector, which is what it's for. Well, that and you could have two completely different loads, perhaps toxic and non-toxic if you are on a drive where you might see a duck over the guns. mossy835
i all ways fire the open first, if a long shot a use the tight choke.
viking
thanks guys, i think im gonna go with bottom barrel first and have a open choke in that and 1/4 in the top and see how we go, im sure that will do for sporting clays and the odd bit of DTL, im not one to mess about with chokes, as abeginer i want to keep it nice and simple, thanks for all the help guys, keep up the good work, lee
njc110381
Another reason for firing the bottom barrel first is the line of recoil. Because the energy is coming from lower down the centre line of the gun, the recoil comes back at you more rather than flipping the muzzle up. This means you keep a more steady swing for the second barrel if needed
garyb
Make sure the switch is either set on one or the other... I've seen a few beretta's now (including one of mine), where by if the switch is somewhere in between the two it will not fire the 2nd. bobt
I have seen some guns where if the selector is in the middle BOTH barrells go bang, it hurts.

roadkill
with regards to the subject ( safty catch ) Just incase you havent found it yet its the same switch you use to sellect the barrells , you just slide it backwards and you will see a S for safe
Guest The Outlaw
I forgot to mention that 1/4 & 1/2 for DTL is ok if you are fast at shooting them, if not go for 1/2 & 3/4. As they are going away birds the pattern gets blow easily and will have holes in it at 40 yards. Straw bale shoots you should try Skeet & 1/4 or 1/4 & 1/4 Registered sporting use 1/4 & 1/2 You will find these chokes are more than good enough for your chosen disaplines. When we coach on easy targets we use cylinder & skeet, but for normal shooting we use the above chokes. The comment about line of recoil is correct but if you have mounted the gun properly it shouldnt be much of an issue, a good point though that people forget about.
