 Pin, am i right in thinking that a 55mm then requires a 70mm chamber to "uncurl" properly as its fired?

It just seems weird to label them as 70mm when they are in fact 55mm??? ;)

I'm not sure, all I know is I think I have seen carts expressed as the actual length, as well as a length which wasn't actually the size which I assumed pertained to the dimensions of the chamber in the gun.

asa few have said 70mm is the cart lenght when not crimped ie ya need a 70mm chamber or bigger to fire them or the crimp will have noware to open and it will be restricted into the bore and the wad will jam into the crimp and cause excess back pressure and probly blow the gun up .sparkie

You can have 50mm shells that are only suitable in 70mm chambers; and you can have 70mm long shells that won't even cycle a semi-auto. It's all down to powder and shot quantities and the PRESSURE generated. Years ago, (1973ish) when the Eley factory blew up, all sorts of shells were imported; one of which was a little paper-cased devil called 'HK-27'. These vicious little fellows would cycle a Browning long recoil A-5 and they were only 53mm long!!

Always look for 'Suitable for use in guns with xy mm only' - and go by that.
