I love it when people come on tv talking about expensive food, and let's face it some of it is damn expensive. Not everyone can afford it, so I'd entirely agree that they are needed to feed the world and it's only going to get worse not better. Try as an experiment setting a budget, say dole level, just for a week and live only on that factoring in bills etc. Because I tell ya soemthing, the gobs spouting about organic this and freerange whatever do NOT have money worries.

We are being conned big time by the sellers of "organic", "fresh", "wild", "free range" , "etc" foodstuffs.

"Wild" salmon that live in cages in sea lochs and are fed on animal waste, "free range" chickens that have never set foot on grass, "organic" foods grown on farms where certain pesticides and chemicals are permitted, the list goes on and on.

If I was on the dole with my circumstances (number of dependents in household) I'd be bringing in around £200 a week plus my mortgage paid and be saving around £40 petrol in a week, I think I'd do ok :good:

oh and I forgot no rates to pay either

and I would be eligible for an interest free social fund crisis loan every year for my broken cooker and washing machine (summer holiday and drink money)

If you want to be 100% sure buy from a local butcher you can trust I do that when I can but then when I have a tight week then it's down to Tescos. I support the local produce when I can.

As for the dole, well I can't comment because I have never been there but it does make you think when you see what goes on (allegedly).
