lurcherboy
I went from being a free individual to owing 111k over nineteen years so I would like to offer you all some sound advice. Do not get mugged into a self certifying mortgage by a broker that has his eye on the commision rather than your needs and never take on debts for any members of your family no matter what their need may be LB

AdamC
Isn't this a bit of a bragging thread? Bragging in which way ? Having a big mortgage doesnt impress me* and neither does paying off your mortgage*. EDIT: *I think that work / life / money / enjoyment balance is the most important. You cant bury it with you !! I would have thought having a small mortgage or only a short period left to pay is something to brag abount. My mortgage is certainly nothing to brag about, cannot imagine it impressing anyone, least of all me. Your are quite right about finding a balance and reaching a point where you are happy with your lot in life.

BSA Shaun
Owned a house, had a bad split, practically lost pretty much everything and have never been able to get back on the ladder. Can't ever see it happening with the house prices either. Despise renting as its dead money, but can't afford to buy again due to debts 'inherited' from an extremely unsavoury ex. Ah well life goes on, happily married now with 2 beautiful daughters.

Andy W
I owe £38,000 and have 10 years left, I completely lost my previous house in 1990 when I got divorced so I had to start all over again, I was lucky to be in a job at the time which gave me as much overtime as I could handle, I now have my own business and aim to get the mortgage paid off over the next 7 years. I remember the days of the 13% mortgage rate, it totally skint me.
the last engineer
what rates you guys paying on mortgages there now, i heard there were a few scary one for a while, have they at least come down at all, i think we are currently looking at these five-year fixed rate is 7.44% possible discounted to 6.44% some companies offer a 4.99 % obviously pending financesand terms it can get funny running one bank to another for the best rates, its your dosh so you gotta make the most of it right. my home is payed out, my other two have $55k and $280K all locked in and being payed off nicely, still the best investment in my opinion.
