Baiting for squirrels?

Had a thought today about baiting for squirrels. The plan basically involves putting up a couple bird feeders full of peanuts in an area where there are alot of squirrels and waiting for them to show up. I'm assuming they're rather rat like in their ways, so maybe leave them up full of peanuts for a couple days beforehand? Anybody tried anything like this? Thoughts please!

They arent too hard to trap.I have had 5 out of the back garden in a cage trap.Bait was bread and the good old peanut butter.I only caught any after I pushed the trap right into a bush near their run on top of the fence.Think theyre hard to snare unless you good at snaring.Like trying to hang someone with elastic rope .

Try a couple of corn on the cobs with a handfull of sweetcorn scattered, they love that especially in traps.

I have shot many a squirrel on a bird feeder. They seem to love peanuts! I didn't put the feeders up for them I was asked to clear a neighbours garden of the pesky blighters as they were digging up their lawn and making a mess :drinks: . They happened to have birdfeeders filled up to the brim with peanuts  and I managed to shoot 5 in a day :drinks: (smallish but safe to shoot in back garden). In fact they like bird feeders so much that you can buy squirrel proof feeders which spin around when they have a weighty rodent on them... see this clip:

If you want to resort to snaring them, then this is a good method:

Cut yourself a long pole of Hazel or similar timber, and set several snares around it about half way along it so there is no route up the pole without going through a snare. Tie the snares to a long (2 feet ish) length of strong twine and hold them in place with a dowel drilled into the pole (like a rabbit snare peg set on the ground). Lean the pole against a tree you often see squirrels in.

They're nosey little things, so will run up the pole and through a snare. When they panic and pull to free themselves they will fall off the pole, and hang from the string. They can't get back to the pole so will not escape ???

EDIT...Just watched the clip. That's not funny :drinks:

i would agree with the people saying that peanuts are good, when we used to put a bird feeder with peanuts in out in our garden, we used to get the squirels destroying the feeder to get the peanuts, there like rats, will eat there way through anything! if you use an actual bird feeder then i would sugest using a VERY hard wearing one, we have used metal ones any they still get through also, dont get one that will swing around! it will make things more difficult!

How long are we talking? I've heard some people say about two days for rats, and others say a couple weeks. Do you happen to know anything about snaring squirrels?

yes you can snare them and its ohh so easy as well but NOT if thers any reds in the area

first work out where a run is or stand a rail up agenst a tree and bait it then go to your loacal fishing shop and ask for some 20lb trace wire then make a snare about 1 1/2 ft long make 3 for each rail or 2 for each run place the snares about 2 1/2ft apart and a 21/2 inch noose about 1/2 to an inch high

when the squirrle runs up the rail or along the fence or run it finds its selfe in a snare and jumps off the rail and hangs its self this noise attrects other squirrles and they get nails as well hence the multiple snares hope this helps

I can not find my pictures so I borrowed these two from another site. They are of one type we use. The feeder is made from 4 inch pvc pipe with a y and 2 end caps. Glue the bottom end cap in place and drill some 1/4 inch drain holes in it. Do not glue the top one as you need to be able to remove it for filling with corn.

Another one we use is a bucket feeder.

Use a 5 gallon bucket, unsnap the lid and remove. Using a jig saw cut a u shape big enough for a squirrel to enter starting at the lip. Drill some drain holes in the bottom of bucket. Fill with corn replace lid and either strap to a tree or hang with handle.

Hope these help,
