webber
Our keeper tells me that he has been giving the pheasants fat balls for wild birds as he says that they love them. I have started to save the dregs from my morning cerials, and intend to buy some wild bird food to mix with it. I wondered if anyone could advise as to the best type of fat to use, if there is a best type, and the process involved? webber
Poacher
At home we just use any fat from the frying pan etc, pour it into a plastic cup (when its liquid) combined with the nuts that fall off the outside of the bread etc When its all hard we just spoon it into one of those cage type feeders and stick it in the garden, the birds love it. vole
For garden birds I always use beef dripping melted in the microwave then stirred into seed in a tupperware container. I cool it in fridge then turn it out.Can make really big ones.

Mungler
Fat balls - only yesterday they were showing how to make these on CBBC. Get some fat, heat gently until liquid, add whatever bird food you want to it, push it into a youghurt pot, stick in fridge = job done. MC
OR, buy them from your local market, you can buy them cheaper than you can buy lard. I got some 6 for a quid.

webber
Thanks chaps. I'm mainly after a way of making something good from our kitchen waste products. Does chicken fat go solid? I've tried to ask Mrs. webber, but she has just mounted her broomstick for the second time today. 14:10 and neither of our kids have been near or telephoned, so I'm taking the flack. webber
