I missed the program, but remember how contraversial Enoch Powell was at the time, but the proof of the pudding, and all that. Really difficult topic, and we can't tar everybody with the same brush, most of us will be from some form of immigrant stock, but I think Tinbum says it all. How many ex pats are there living abroad, expecting everyone to speak our lingo, to be able to get English food, beer, etc. Most of the friends I have living abroad, have not managed to even half master the native tongue, they live in tight knit Brit communities, and carry on trying to live their own way. If we wish, and expect, immigrants to our shores to embrace our British culture, and quite rightly so, could we not set a better example by changing our attitude to the way we as a nation, behave abroad? And as Pirate has rightly pointed out, many of us Brits, apart from not bothering to learn the lingo, import PG tips, Brown Sauce & Cheese & Onion crisps. We drink in Irish pubs & go to the station everyday to by the Sun/Star/Mirror. I for one, learnt both the language and the culture of both countries I lived in. In Germany: I learnt German, I learnt that sauerkraut does taste good and last but not least I lost my sense of humour! In Holland: I learnt Dutch, learnt how to make cheese and of course regularly smoked drugs with the local constabulary. Pirate: There's a big difference here. Ex pats abroad fall into two main categories, having either made their money here and moved abroad to retire, buying a property and adding to their chosen country's economy, or, are suitably skilled and work in said country, often running their own business, employing local people and again adding to the economy. I very much doubt you will find many, if any, British ex pats relying on handouts and housing in foreign lands. The reason is simple, they'd get a better deal here, that's why so many immigrate here and play the system. The problem is it's so easy to play the system when there are so many civil rights lawyers and politicians showing them the way to do it!! I would also very much doubt the British who emigrate to a country will start to slag off it's culture, customs or religions, as i'm sure they would do a lot of 'homework' BEFORE upping sticks and moving, and would, therefore know exactly what they are letting themselves in for. DramaQueen Posted March 9, 2008 Report Share Posted March 9, 2008 As well as the already bursting immigration problem we have here, we also need to look at some of our own, for example we have the chavs that make life hell for people, then we have the "unemployed because its easier to sit at home and earn" culture, then we have the unfit for work, and claiming disabilty benefit and diasbled badges, when there is nothing a good few weeks graft wouldnt sort out. Do you actually think it'll do these scummy little kids any good, or will it just give them a few years of learning to be a bit handy. Not all regular soldiers who choose to go in to the forces are as white as white saints so why would it sudenly change all these nobbers around. When I see this argument I always remember a very well written letter in a newspaper by a WWII vet, who said something along the lines of our army is one of the best in the world, who can cherry pick who they take in, why on earth would they dilute this fantastic force with having to take every little scumbag, who wouldn't in a million years get in otherwise. There are plenty of jobs out there,..................how do we know that? Because the government in their infinite wisdom have told us there are. And to prove how many jobs there are they've allowed tens of thousands of immigrants in to do them!! Perhaps if they'd stopped these lazy British kids from claiming benefits they could have got them into work and stopped the need for mass immigration into the bargain, killing two birds with one stone. From what i can gather most immigrants work in lower skilled, lower paid jobs, often in factories or agriculture, jobs even the dimmest chav can do. They should be made to do these job or have their benefits taken away, simple solution for a simple generation!!
